These Days: Friday, June 5th, 2015

I remember when I hated Governors Ball the way I hated all music festivals, good if you’re a boy scout who didn’t mind camping out all night and good if you enjoyed seeing concerts from a stage further away than the last row at Metlife. BUT VIP tickets get you close and Governors Ball is an urban gig, reachable via subway. So here we go… today: Rudimental, Florence + The Machine and Drake are the highlights.

Fucked Up Releases Interactive Video Project For ‘Year Of The Hare’

When you arrive on the website, you have to ‘use your keyboard to escape the loops’ as they say, meaning clicking randomly on the page? At least this is what I did first. I could not find many of these looping clips, then they suddenly appeared, one by one, and I played a loop till I couldn’t stand it anymore… so I wanted to see another one but didn’t know how to get back!

What If Rock Stars Were The Days Of The Week?

If one more person comes up to me today and says “get a life Lababedi”, I’m gonna play the new Dawes album on their ass till they beg for forgiveness. I wanted a life and I got a life and heavy knows I was miserable, so instead of spending my life getting it, I shall spend my life doing completely ridiculous wastes of time like this: imagining what the days of the week would be if they were rock stars

Sepp Blatter stepped down as President of the Football Association FIFA amid allegations of huge corruption, kickbacks, bribery, you know, like Albany only for sports. Incidentally, if FIFA had given the US the next world cup instead of Qatar, I wouldn’t if the US would’ve pursued the corruption charges quite as vigorously?

While Richard Branson saw the space age as a cheap holiday for billionaires, Elon Musk, the inventor of Pay Pal, saw it as a way to cut itself right into the industrial complex with its Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon spacecraft lifted off from Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. Senator Rand Paul filibustered a delay on the revised Patriots act vote, thereby delaying it till Tuesday or Wednesday. I may not agree with much that either the Tea Party or the Kentuckian does, but institutionalized spying should be illegal without a warrant. Paul is running for President.

10 Songs: June 1st, 2015

Who Needs The Peace Corps? – The Mothers – Off melody, jazz inflected sneer at the state of the country especially the hippies who at the time seemed liked the height of hypocrisy, worth the same disparagement as just about everybody else, but today seems like a glorious up in flames failure. Zappa seems between bewilderment and an austere despising…. in 1968 – B

Sajak’s penultimate song last night was a cover of The Stranglers epic self portrait “(Get A) Grip (On Yourself)”, one of the tastiest licks you’ll hear. Meanwhile, Dawes fans are upset I gave their new album a “B”…. they don’t seem to understand how I can like the playing and the lyric but think the songs didn’t make it.

Bruce Springsteen’s Tribute To Pete Townshend

As I grew older, the Who’s music seemed to grow with me. The sexual frustration, the politics, identity. These things coursed through my veins with every concurring Who album. I always found myself there somewhere in their music. “The Seeker”; the seeker is the guy in “Born to Run.”

None of it makes the slightest bit of sense, all of it is Disney pretty nonsense, the acting is bad, really really bad, three people wrote the script and if any of them can make sense of the story they chose not to share it. Art Garfunkel Talks… But Not To Us

‘George came up to me at a party once and said ‘my Paul is to me what your Paul is to you.’ He meant that psychologically they had the same effect on us. The Pauls sidelined us. I think George felt suppressed by Paul and I think that’s what he saw with me and my Paul. Here’s the truth: McCartney was a helluva music man who gave the band its energy, but he also ran away with a lot of the glory.’

All endings is my ending, time is so inexorable, so relentless, so infinite but not for me, every change, every wedding, every death, every hope… I haven’t much watched David Letterman in many many years but if ever anyone seemed to be sick of having a Late Night TV show by the end of it, Letterman seemed sick of it. He was ready to leave. But his left is our left and the least sentimental television personality brings out the sentimental in me!

The Unbearable Lightness Of Pop Music

There is so much music out there that I feel if you could find all the good stuff the 2010s would be the equal of the 00s… but how do you find it?
