Candice Martello aka Hemming

Hemming is the new project of Candice Martello, a young singer-songwriter from Philadelphia, and her new single ‘I’ll Never Be the Man for You’ is a really pretty song… it’s a slow, warm and melancholic ballad with Candice’s extraordinary pure, fierce and high vocals, which can sometimes evoke Cat Power’s voice, without the smoky part. There is also a lot to say about these light ooo-ooos, that sound as ghostly as a Pixie song and as poignant as an old folk song.

Candice grew up in a family deeply rooted in music, she played guitar when she was just 9 year-old and began writing her own songs shortly after. She will be releasing her debut full-length album as Hemming, on July 24th via Custard Records, the Los Angeles based label run by songwriter and producer Linda Perry. Perry discovered her during Make or Break : The Linda Perry Project, a show she created with VH1 as the antithesis of music reality shows. At the time Candice was a member of Omar, a two-piece punk band she formed with close friend Nick Fanelli, but her solo work caught Perry’s attention, and soon Candice split from the duo to develop her own sound.

‘I’m beyond proud of Hemming’ said Perry, ‘Making this record was pure, raw and fun. There’s a familiar stabbing warmth in Hemming’s songwriting much like hot chocolate by a warm fire while resting your head on a pillow filled with pins and needles. This is the perfect album to relaunch Custard Records, simply because it’s honest.’

I can see why she is talking about honesty, especially when Martello cites sensible artists as Cat Power, Metric, M. Ward and Elliott Smith as musical influences. But it is ‘Vitamins’, another song from the upcoming album, that Perry heard first, and the song triggered a very emotional reaction in her: ‘My body flushed as if I had shot Niacin into my veins, I held back the tears, kept composed and said to myself, ‘Holy fucking shit you just found Jimmy Hoffa!’’, she declared to billboard. The acoustic, finger-picking song has heartbreaking vocals repeating ‘Do you think I’ll make you feel better’ as if Candice was dialoguing with her pills, and it has peaked at #23 on the Billboard Trending 140 chart and at #13 on the Emerging Artist Billboard Trending 140 chart.

Hemming’s upcoming album will feature ten songs produced by Perry and written by Martello, at the exception of ‘Home’, a song she wrote in collaboration with Perry.
