News: The great, and I mean great, English playwright Dennis Potter, named the cancer that killed him “Rupert” after Rupert Murdoch. I met Murdoch briefly when he bought WNEW and made it WNYW -the FOX affiliate in New York, and thought he was a slimy lizard. That was after Ronald Reagan sold out the free airwaves and gave Rupert both citizenship ahead of millions and an equally slimy handshake. 20th Century Fox Chairman Rupert is stepping down to be replaced by his sons Lachlan and James. The biggest changing of the guard by a major despot since Hafez handed over the reigns of Syria to Bashar.Al Assad. With similar results is my bet.
Live: At a loose end this Friday night I seriously considered going to Paul Weller at Terminal 5, I am not crazy about the new album but Weller is great live and I thoroughly enjoyed him a at Best Buy a few years ago. And the price, $52.500 all included. wasn’t outrageous. but this is a case where the venue stopped me in my tracks. I don’t want to go to T5 under just about any circumstances. Tyler the Creator at Irving Plaza is another option.
Movies: This is a weekend to wander around the city and pop into movies: so far I have “Soaked In Bleach” (which I just bought off VIMEO for $14.99), “Love And Mercy” and “Jurassic World” on my list.
Recorded: The Sparks meets Franz Ferdinand album had me saying off with their heads but it actually it has a very very out of time sound to it, like just pre-70s rock and roll. Not my taste but then it wasn’t my taste then, and as they wittily note, collaborations don’t work.
