A New Change.Org Petition About Kurt Cobain’s Investigation Misbehaving

Since the release of ‘Soaked in Bleach’, conversations have been heating up in Nirvana discussion forums, Facebook pages, and Rock NYC received plenty of aggressive comments after posts related to the movie. there are two camps and there is a war between them.

This renewed interest in the case has probably triggered this new petition on Change.org, asking to reopen the investigation into Kurt Cobain’s death. I tried to sign it as soon as I found it and immediately noted some problems. First of all it went down several times, and many other people were not able to sign it. Then something very weird happened. There were about 80 signatures yesterday morning, then I checked a few hours later and the number of signatures had fallen to 16, then 14? How was it possible? I read that it very rarely happens when a lot of spam is encountered, but I would be surprised it was the case. I saw the numbers changing up and down several times, there are currently back to 86, but occasionally the website is returning messages like ‘the website is misbehaving’…

I thought it was very weird and out of the ordinary for a Change.org petition, it was obvious that something was going on. I sent a message to the site but I am still waiting for any answer. This is a highly recognized platform that provides a petition tool for more than 65 million users, and it is used by serious organizations such as Amnesty International or the Humane society. So what was going on? Was it the work of a Courtney Love‘s overzealous fan? Or the work of her direct entourage, her lawyers? Are they capable of doing this and are they really afraid of something?

It is a bit strange since this is far from being the first petition set up about the case. There are many other Cobain-related petitions on the site, like this old one, closed with 3,449 supporters, or this one, also closed and which did not get any exposure,… and there are a few others, which have just started, proving that people never use the search button before starting another one!

After noting the strange grading on ‘Soaked in Bleach’ IMDb page (probably demonstrating a manipulation of the data), after knowing about Courtney Love’s direct threats to the theaters screening SIB, I would not be surprised if people were also messing up with these petitions. However, since the previous ones have never lead anywhere, I wonder what they are afraid about?
