Arena Cinema in Hollywood is an independent theater, which advertises itself as ‘showcasing the best in Independent Film’, and screening ‘these hard-to-find indie gems you search for and yearn to see that aren’t getting the big screen love anywhere else’… great! But wait a minute! On Wednesday night, I visited their website and saw they had programmed three screenings of ‘Soaked In Bleach’, on Friday and Saturday, and I was determined to attend one on Friday. But the controversial movie, directed by Benjamin Statler and reporting about Kurt Cobain’s death through the eyes of private detective Tom Grant was probably too hot to handle for Hollywood, when I went back to their page on Thursday, the screenings had disappeared.
I checked a few conversations online and I discovered that a few people had encountered the same problem elsewhere in the US.
‘Tom, our theatre alerted us that Courtney’s attorneys are trying to stop the showing of this film. They said they fear it won’t be shown again this weekend,’ wrote someone, ‘Before we even got to watch it though, a man entered the theater and told us that Courtney had put out a Cease and Desist order in and her lawyer had been in touch with the theater. They played the film anyway! Many of the people in the theater walked out looking stunned’, wrote another person, ‘I’m in Tulsa. I actually just found out that our theater here, that showed the film, is, so far, the only one who DID NOT receive the order. They are still gonna show it through Saturday. But a lot of other places have received the Cease and Desist order from her Lawyer’, replied another woman.
Circle Cinema, a theater in Oklahoma even wrote this on its Facebook page: ‘Apparently several theatres showing SOAKED IN BLEACH have received cease and desist letters from Courtney Love’s attorney. Good news, we haven’t. See you at the shows!’…
May be Courtney does not care about Oklahoma that much but visibly it is happening in many places and I wanted to be sure it was also the case in Hollywood so I decided to call the theater. A guy picked up the phone and he visibly didn’t want to answer my question about the movie, he just told me he couldn’t speak about it. Then I asked him ‘did you receive threats?’ and he replied ‘we are not allowed to discuss it’.
This is unbelievable! I have no doubt Courtney Love is a very powerful person, and this scandalous event proves it one more time, but what does she want to accomplish at the end? The more you censor a movie, the more it becomes interesting and intriguing, and I am even more eager to see it now. Plus does she think she can stop the truth to come out because she has managed to cancel a few screenings? The movie is available worldwide on Vimeo on demand, and she can’t stop this, can she? Does Courtney Love know she looks terribly bad now? It looks like damage control to me, and I wonder why she attacks theaters and does not sue Statler or Grant? But may be she can’t because she knows that they are telling the truth and she would lose? I will watch ‘Soaked in Bleach’ at home, Courtney doesn’t own the internet yet.
An update: Tom Grant just confirmed the story:
‘As many of you have already assumed, it’s true. Courtney’s lawyers had legally threatened the owners of each and every theater that had advertised they would be screening “Soaked In Bleach.”
Unfortunately, the threat worked on one of the theaters. Did you get that? Just ONE of the theaters. All of the other theaters that were scheduled for screening read the threatening letter then moved ahead.
I support and stand behind the theaters that are screening or are going to be screening “Soaked in Bleach.” I view this as the support of “Freedom of Speech.” Watch the film, then YOU decide..
You see, there are many business people in this world who CANNOT be intimidated. I’m sure they are now very happy they didn’t fold. I would like to express my gratitude and admiration for the courage they have displayed as an example to the rest of us all.
As you can see and read from posts online, “Soaked in Bleach” was a HUGE success at each theater where it was screened so far.
I mentioned earlier that I was at the Crestwood Theater in Westwood Village last night with Benjamin Statler, Sarah Scott and August Emerson. As the film concluded, the audience reaction was overwhelming. The ovation was not anticipated, and a second round began as the credits started rolling!
We went there with the expectation of possible heckling or other disturbances. It turned out to be just the opposite. Along with so many others who wanted to express their appreciation after the film, I had one young lady come up to me to talk, but she could not stop apologizing. She told me she had been a huge fan of Courtney’s. She added that she had sent me several sarcastic comments on Facebook and other social media, using several different account names. After watching MOH and now “Soaked in Bleach,” she felt and acted ashamed as she apologized to me.
I assured this very sweet young lady, “It’s ok. This has been happening for years. We know that people who have never really seen the facts normally react like you did. You don’t need to feel bad at all. It’s no big deal.”
That didn’t seem to help her much. She still apologized several times. It was a moment that will remain etched in my mind. It was more than a text message—it was a human being standing in front of me face-to-face, saying things that were so meaningful and powerful, even though she didn’t need to say anything.
“Soaked in Bleach” may have made an impact on this young woman, but she certainly made an impact on me!

Unfortunately for me, it seems that the threat worked on the theater where I was planning to see the movie! May be it is because she has more connection in Hollywood? Who knows? But I salute all the other theaters which went on with the screenings.

As I do totally understand your frustrations, I still feel this is a good movie to see; no matter your stand points?. You are correct 100% in the facts that you bring, of real life situations that are not being discussed atm, in regards to other real life events,….BUT, it’s allot of small things in life (like THIS movie, Soaked In Bleach), that needs to bring the truths out? Could you imagine if every little thing was swept under the carpet? Where do we start? Where do we start to finish doing it? How many are there?….This is just 1 out of 1000,000 things to start with, to show the truth about past events? Well, I think you missed a few things here.. Live through this was recorded in October 93′. It just happened to be RELEASED shortly after he died in April 94′. I’m pretty sure its documented that he was at some of these recording sessions, and him and Kristen Pfaff were tight, he would have found out if Courtney was ripping him off while he was still breathing. But as far as lyrics go, most of the songs have female references anyway…doll parts, MISS world, asking for it. Wether or not you want to admit it, the bitch does have some talent. Her first album, pretty on the inside sold more copies than bleach, nirvanas first album. She was even almost lead role in the movie Sid and Nancy, if they hadn’t picked out an actress before her session. The producers were so impressed, she ended up doing another movie. So I don’t think she would be a complete nobody if it went for him. But shouldn’t it be better this way? Fame destroyed kurt, he lost his daughter because of fame. I think the Seattle music scene itself is an example of how the media just turned punk rock into a commodity (watch ‘hype’ if you haven’t already) it’s just too bad that bands that were just as good never made it. But in Courtney’s case, if she was infact, the murderer, her fame isn’t helping her. How many haters does she have because of Tom grant alone? It’s better this way.
But she also didn’t get him into dope. I’ve read sources that he was using as far back as 86′. The Seattle music scene at the time was known for heavy heroin use. He wasn’t even the first ‘grunge’ artist to off himself with heroin. Andy Wood was. Kurt also talked about doing lsd in highschool, and shooting coke with the members of alice in chains…so we can’t really call CL a crack head and avoid the fact he did it too.
And don’t get me wrong, I’m no Courtney fanatic by any means. I like 2 albums, and I think the fame ruined her music. But isn’t there a chance someone else killed him? Drug dealers perhaps..? I’ve been a fan of Kurt/Nirvana since I was a kid and their first cd came out when I was in grade school. It was heartbreaking to me when my dad told me the news stated Kurt had died.
I’ve followed the theories behind his death ever since he passed. Some are wild but some make so much sense. After the years of reading about his “suicide”, I firmly believe Courtney had him killed. I believe the following to be true:
Kurt did leave rehab, but not alone. He purchased the shotgun alone. We went home, did heroin BUT NOT ALONE. Kurt was so high that someone staged his death by holding the gun in his hand while another pulled the trigger. Riggor set in and his hand was “locked” to the gun. This was done because Kurt was leaving Courtney and quitting Nirvana. Courtney panicked, Hole would be NOTHING without the help he had given her and would’ve continue to if he wasn’t leaving her. Courtney loves one thing and it is MONEY. The comment she made about wanting to be rich and famous before she was are haunting. She would’ve done anything to be famous.
She was having an affair with other music artists while Kurt was still alive. Francis was his world and he gushed over her, said he wanted to be clean and a better father for her. I believe it.

I think kurt killed himself. He was depressed and had many things going on at the time from all directions in his life. Its so easy to blame this person, or that person.
My mother took legal meds, she had major issues with them for yeaars..growing up, i tried to tell anyone whom would listen..nobody would…we had money, nice things, house etc but the physical and emotional abuse was awful….but eventually she ended up dying years later under questionable situations at her home…BUT her dad, and family then wanted to see what they wanted to see even though she had taken more and more of these meds and got crazy….then after everyone wanted to come to me and tell me how sorry they are for not listening to me all those years, and they wanted to blame my step dad for “killing her” when she had been doing it openly for years but no one wanted to see it or to listen..
So i understand there are pieces that might not fit..i know kurt and courtney both had/have issues…but i know kurt loved her and would stick up for her, even sometimes when she was in the wrong because he loved her…many people dont realise what drug abuse, and depression looks like and can really do. Its sad, heartbreaking and an emotional roller coaster ride day in and out, and its something you never ever get over. In hind site we can see how downhill courtney went and whom she became..she loved kurt and i know that when he died that apart of her died with him..anyone with half a brain can see this..you can see the havoc it caused..do i think she is perfect?? Hell no…do i think her and kurt would fight?? Heck yes..whom among you havent fought with your boyfriend/girlfriend?? Everyone does…and most all of these people around them at that time and lots of shady people, thats what the drug lifestyle does, and i am sure fame would as well.
I mean, if courtney was trying to posion or kill him in rome..you think he would have told the world or scream to high heaven in the press and to anyone whom would listen she was trying to kill him..he did not..
Also people want to talk about no prints..he was found in a humid green house and had been there for a few days..everaporation and condiensation im sure would affect those thing..

Many decades ago, Polygraph tests were unreliable, but with modern technology, they are MUCH more accurate and used all the time in criminal cases. You believe what you want, but don’t be afraid to consider other ways of looking at this situation. If you believe that you know more than top-level forensic scientists, law enforcement detectives, first responder paramedics at Kurt’s death scene, toxicologists, medical examiners and the like, you have my blessing.

Cross, and “unfinished rhapsody:the other side of fame by janet pfaff whom was holes bass player, and the poppy z brite “courtney love the real story” am reading “heavier then heaven now”
I am open to reading and seeing different takes on the issues, and have kept an open mind. I remember the day a friend melissa and i were switching my bedrooms around and it came on the radio a blonde haired person was found dead in kurts home…melissa said “i hope its courtney” and i said “you think she would have killed him?” We we both 15 years old at the time, had no real life experience etc. My parents did not have cable that extended to mtv because they did not like the bands and music, so they thought by not having mtv in the house i would not listen to that type of music. Im just going by everything ive read on cobaincase.com and justiceforkurt.com. and ive watch a ton of youtube videos…but between that, and knowing what i know from growing up with a mom like i did, being only child and then my mom threw me out and eminacipated me at 15..and then years later seeing her again for her to die in her bedroom in the middle of the day, one had on her night table, one hand on bed and the rest of the family wanted to blame my step dad for killing her..he kept all her money, house, etc etc the tox came back resptoirty depression due to perscription medication..and they couldnt find anything in her body other wise that would have caused her to stop breathing..but on her meds, she would nod out a lot toward the end…and i had told the family since i was 5 and got left with her she needed help, then as i got older and after she threw me out, the family noticed things werent right and eventually she died…so its sad and to be quite honest, it has messed with me for years..change whom i am, i dont have friends, i have my pets, internet, flower, and veggie garden and i read constantly ..always have a book with me…but its changed me and affected me my whole life, and it wasnt played out in public..i cant imagine what kurt would say looking down, knowing he took his own life, but now the wife is getting blamed and his daughter haas to grow up under this as well..and
Dont you think frances would have an idea if her mom had something to do with it?? I am sure she has way more access to records and such then we ever will and she i assume knows he killed himself…i mean..thats says a lot right there…
I think the people whom already have a belief one way or the other is not going to change it..just like you have people commenting “i hate courtney love” so there for she must be a murderess correct?? Smh. My heart goes out to her and frances…because these people do have real feelings, emotions, and issues and it shows it took a toll on courtney..
If she is so bad, how come she hasnt remarried for money?? Im sure lots of rich guys out there would love to be with her…if thats what she is truely after..then why hasnt she?? Why not go and have another baby by a rich guy and get money that way if supposdly that it all she wants in life anyway???

And yes, i have poured through justiceforkurt.com, and cobaincase.com and have watched lots of video’s, online, read books etc ..and i will watch soaked in bleach as well, but i will not pay 14.99 or whatever for it, so i will watch it when it comes out on cable, or when amazon has copies for sale for 5.00 or whatever..because as i say, courtney sure dont pay me for telling my thoughts on the subject 🙂

Having grown up in Seattle in that era and unfortunately, personally experiencing the highs and lows of having a junkie sister, who ultimately committed suicide, these comments are exasperating. The depths of despair I witnessed with her addiction, would make any human; famous, wealthy, or not, seriously contemplate suicide at some point or another. I’m Sorry, but from my experience, junkies are not that calculated, or organized. This was a very high profile case at the time. It has been rehashed for decades now? If there was one scintilla of proof of her involvement, don’t you think TMZ would have a field day with it by now?!? (I love a good conspiracy theory, too. But did all of your logic fly out the fucking window???). Yes, I did watch the film. He had just left rehab, so clearly there was no dispute that he was battling addiction, correct? While Love clearly has many character flaws, she sounds just like any other self-absorbed, erratic and bewildered, half-the-shit-they-say-don’t-make-ANY-sense, addict. It is par for the course, actually. My point is unless you know what it’s like to personally know someone suffering a life-threatening addiction, you have NO right to judge. My gut feeling is that the reality of the situation was FAR more complex than we will ever know. Sorry to disappoint you, but ultimately there are no winners, or evil goblins to blame here Addiction sucks, in general.

I made a comment about a movie which was opportunistically created to make money on a man’s death 20 years ago and I find that offensive. I don’t like the man, but I find it offensive to make money like that no matter who it is about.
Same goes for Courtney’s Montage of Heck. The kazillionth documentary with Krist, staring uncomfortably in the abyss.
