When I saw Queens of the Stone Age at the Forum in October, Josh Homme said goodbye by announcing ‘see you in 2 years!’… 2 years? That seemed such a long time, but if you thought that Homme would be resting comfortably with his family, you are highly mistaken: he is releasing a Eagles of Death Metal album with Jesse Hughes. ‘Zipper Down’ – well, check out this sexy and hilarious art cover! – is gonna be the first studio album of the band since their 2008 ‘Heart On’, and they have shared the first single entitled ‘Complexity’.
I saw them live once, it was a long time ago but I remember them to be a lot of fun, especially when Jack Black joined them and did a few acrobatics on stage. EODM are the goofy version of QOTSA, they are lighter, poppier but strangely, they still manage to rock your socks. ‘Complexity’ is the perfect example of this, a blend of poppy-cheesy choruses with rocking riffs which sound so upbeat that you almost see the large smile on their faces. There are groovy sax and keys like in some classic rock tunes of the 50’s, and this is even turning to a close-to-operatic choral at one point, like Elvis meeting Queens, or some similar crazy combination. According to Consequence of Sound, a funkier version of the song was already released in 2011 as Hughes’ Boots Electric solo album ‘Honkey Kong’ but both guys have a lot to say about their new single.
‘Complexity’ is the musical equivalent of holding a lucky rabbit’s foot with the unlucky rabbit still attached,’ says Homme, ‘’Complexity’ is sort of our way of saying, ‘Keep it simple, stupid,’ adds Hughes. Homme has also something to say to promote the whole album: ‘In an independent study, four out of three doctors say ZIPPER DOWN is an eargasm trapped inside a crazerbeam. And I believe them.’ That’s great, these two guys write their own review and we don’t have anything else to do.
Meanwhile they have just started a mega world tour from London to the US (in August-September and October) and back to Europe, from June to December. one thing is sure, Homme never rests at home.
‘Zipper Down’ will be out on October 2 via T-Boy/Ume, for all the details about pre-orders visit EODM’s website and for all the dates for their giant world tour visit eaglesofdeathmetal.com.
And that’s not it, they have also announced an upcoming documentary ‘The Redemption of the Devil’, produced by VICE Media and directed by Alex Hoffman, described as ‘an intimate and at times brutally honest portrayal of a year in the life of Jesse Hughes. I watched the trailer on YouTube, and honestly I have no idea what this is about but it sounds like fun.
