Paul McCartney, Miley Cyrus, Kanye West, Paul Simon On Saturday Night Live’s 40th Anniversary Special, February 15th, 2015, Reviewed

Simon, in a gorgeous suit, looked great and, like the other great Paul earlier in the evening, was in superb voice. There is nothing to complain about really, and at the top of the show with Paul auditioning to be host (“I told you we should have done ‘Sound Of Silence'” Simon quips) proves he still has great comic timing.

I am seeing #10, Gregory Porter, in a couple of weeks at the the Harlem Arts Salon at Harlem just as the supple grammy award winning jazz baritone reaches the height of his career with the most streamed jazz album of all times, 2013’s Liquid Spirit. The big man will be on the same bill as another big man, Tomas Doncker, who you might well claim is to the blues what Porter is to jazz.

Beck May Have Won Two Grammys But He Is Still A Scientologist

Masterson thinks the documentary ‘interviewed eight people who hate Scientology’, and he ponders ‘I wonder if Sundance would allow a documentary of, like, eight people who hate Judaism’… Is it such an unfair and stupid comparison, does he know there are entire organizations which mobilize against Scientology in order to denounce the abuse and the isolation in which members of the church are maintain?

Absolutely the new Mavericks is the one we all have our eyes on, Juliana Hatfield? Really, doesn’t she hate everybody for making her play rock and roll or something? Why is she back with her old band? Kate Pierson? The B-52s stalwart has already released two great songs off her debut album so year, I am up for it. Colin Hay???? Still at work but yeah, it’s The Mavericks.

Kanye West Opens His Mouth Again

Every time Kanye opens his mouth, we reach another layer of Kanye’s mind and this is an endless source of entertainment. But why do people respect anything of what he says? This is a guy who admits to never read a book, to be God’s vessel despite contradicting himself at any occasion, so why giving him so much credit?

Medium Cool: Best Talk Show Guest February 16th, 2015

I am going with Chris Brown as the Talk Show guest of the week, with Taylor Swift (and John Oliver in the same show) a close second. I am not sure what Taylor has to sell, maybe her reputation as taylor and her gang of lawyers sue everything that moves every day of the week: she is like Disney suing Ma and Pa toy stores called Timberbell’s Home -as though the name belonged to Disney and not J.M. Barrie/ As for Chris Brown, who was 18 years old when he attacked Rihanna and Brown could join a monastery tomorrow and the headline would read: Woman beater finds God

rock nyc: Top 10 Songs Week Of February 9th, 2015

A great week for songs and albums, the ew ones by Rhiannon, Martin, and Rumer are all excellent, and the current album by segments includes two goodies from Madonna, “Joan Of Arc” and (ot here) “Hold On”. Back to Rhiano, I do wish T-Bone wasn’t representing (again) but what the heck, at least she is a siger who deserves the overblown classicisism Burnett keeps on bringing it.

Joan Of Arc – Madonna – A melodic highlight of her new album, a heartbreak song with a weak metaphor (“I’m not Joan of Arc, not yet) which doesn’t seem to quite make sense after all but yet the bridge is so catchy the song should hit big any way – A-

Prima Donna At Amoeba, Tuesday February 10th 2015

The attitude was sure bold, confident, tough, rising to the expectation of their moniker, with the aesthetic of a garage band really wanting to turn professional and even glam – just check out these matching black outfits – with cool foot-stomping tempos, a bluesy Stones-inspired background in mind for several songs

Joni Mitchell Speaks… But Not To Us

She also has strong words about being alone :’Why does it come as such a shock to know you really have no one? If you’re not ready for that, it’s meaningless. If you’re ready for it and you’re in that space, you’ll burst into tears, and actually, it’ll make you stronger. You’ll be able to accept that, accept your loneliness, when you’re ready

This was a double up so great you may have to go back to Van Morrison following “Gloria” with “Caravan” in 1974 to find a better one.”

‘I was praying and I got a word from God and he says, ‘You got this and I got you,’’ she declared to Ryan Seacrest on the Red Carpet before the Grammy Awards. ‘And then I was on top of the lion and a random guy looked at me with a headset that I’d never communicated with before, he looked me straight in the eyes and said ‘You got this.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, that’s God confirming I can do this!’’
