If you missed the Apollo gig last week the shame on you but if you missed the Apollo gig last week redemption is nearly at hand because o March 11th, D’Angelo is at Best Buy (as we exclusively reported last week) and the American Express presale is today at 10am and while there is no way in hell he can be as good because, at the very least, he won’t have the elemet of surprise, I have every intention of watchig what amouts to one of the greatest shows of all time because, really, if he is half as good he is two times better.
This is part of what I wrote on Sunday morning: “Half an hour in, D’Angelo performed the best 20 minutes of live music of this or for that matter most evenings, with a level of soul and mastery we may never ever see again. Set up by a jazz fuel obtuse and angular version of Roberta Flack’s “Feel Like Making Love”, the primary soul man of his generation followed the song with “Really Love” and “One Mo Gin”. This was a double up so great you may have to go back to Van Morrison following “Gloria” with “Caravan” in 1974 to find a better one.”
Mine was one of a chorus of voices and an audience filled to the brim, in ecstasy over simply one of the best shows you will ever see. and it is back one mo’ gin on March 11th and no serious music fan should even consider missing it.
