The Elliott Smith Mystery: Jennifer Chiba 2003 – 2010 by Alyson Camus

On October 21st 2003, after (but how long after) removing the knife from Elliott’s chest she called 911. She said to the police he had committed suicide, and gave many arguments to support her theory (history of depression and drug addiction, suicide attempts); she also said he had two wounds. She pointed a “suicide note” written in a post-it note to the police.

After that, it has been widely reported she refused to talk to the police. I heard she took a lawyer who told her to stop talking.

The second night after Elliott’s death, she went to his studio in the valley with Robin and another guy in a jeep. The neighbor saw them taking many boxes around midnight. Then they stopped by the memorial wall on Sunset blvd to meet with fans gathered to pay homage to Elliott.

Robin Peringer was her roommate for a while after Elliott’s death, then she went abroad (in England for sure and elsewhere, may be as far as Africa (?) according to some sources). According to someone who had some communication with her at one point, she felt safe and secure over there because no one knew who she was.

She is in a band Hello Menno, and they have played a few gigs in LA.

Before Elliott’s death she was in another band (Happy Ending), and Elliott was working on their recordings, but, because of his death, the record never came out.

In 2004 she sued Elliott’s step mother, Marta Greenwald, the administrator of Elliott’s estate, for $1 million. She sued for breach of oral contract, as she claimed that she had an oral contract for domestic services, that Elliott had promised to provide for her “financial needs and support for the rest of her life” in exchange for her domestic services. She also alleged that she had agreed to be his “manager and agent”. She lost the lawsuit in 2007 after amending her complaint several times.

She became a registered art therapist ATR in 2009, although she has said in many interviews, way before 2009, she was an art therapist (Iman adds: to be clear,it appears that Chiba lied yet again and this was a big one. It is against the law to practise Art Therapy without a license: she either lied that she practised, or she lied that she had a license, and if she worked with children, she endangered their lives). She is now working as a marriage and family therapist in Altadena, CA for David J. Bookbinder at “Transformations”. Here is thelink:

    1. That was something added by my editor by the way. Instead of cowardly commenting and insulting people, would you tell us what you know? Because if you know nothing and still have an opinion, I have zero interest in your comments.

  1. 16 yrs later, still blaming Chiba for killing the greatest songwriter of my generation. 🙁

    1. are YOU still blaming her, or do you accuse ME to still blame her? Just want to clarify
