Joy Divison’s home

With all these Joy Division shirts I see all the time, this house should not stay on the market for very long! The 2-bedroom house situated at 77 Barton Street, Macclesfield, where Ian Curtis lived and died, is up for sale with an asking price of £115,000 ($180,000).

‘Situated in a popular and central location, this double fronted character cottage offers spacious accommodation with two reception rooms, two double bedrooms, a good size kitchen and a shared courtyard garden.’ says the listing on Rightmove.

‘Barton Street is situated in an enviable location within easy access to the town centre and the train station, and is a quiet street comprising a mixture of mainly period cottages.’

‘This particular double fronted terraced cottage was constructed in the late 1880’s to handsome brick elevations and has since been updated with uPVC double glazed windows to front and rear and there is a shared courtyard garden to the rear.

‘The property offers good size accommodation with two separate reception rooms and a spacious newly fitted kitchen to the rear, which gives access to the courtyard garden. At first floor level there are two double bedrooms which are served by the bathroom fitted with a three piece suite. The cottage is warmed by gas fired central heating run on an economic combination boiler and will make the ideal purchase for a first time buyer or buy to let investor.’

Of course, no mention of Ian Curtis anywhere…

The house is the site of various location shots for Anton Corbijn’s 2007 biopic film, ‘Control’. Thus it is a well-known location, and this should stop some people, because who wants to live in a place which has become a landmark of pilgrimage for Joy Division fans? There is even a page made for fans planning to visit the place.

Remember, Ian Curtis’ kitchen table was also sold on eBay for £8,400, after over 65 bids on eBay, and this was highly criticized because the table was in the room where he committed suicide. Well now you can own the whole room, and the whole house!

If you want to know what it looks like inside, this website gives you a good idea of the interior, although the pictures dated from 1987 and the furniture and the carpet have been updated, according to the pictures featuring on the listing. It looks so small and narrow for some reasons. But $180,000 is a bargain for such an historic place – when you think that songwriter Mac Demarco sold his old sneakers for $21,000! This is for you, if you are a fan and want to live in a very depressive place…
