The Day The Music Crashed

It is such an intriguing mystery, but at the end does it matter if it was a pilot error or not? I think it does, imagine if the gun had really been used in flight, imagine if there had been foul play. However I wonder what kind of investigation can be made so long after the accident and when all witnesses have died.

Madonna Versus Lady Gaga? Madonna.

I am as completely unbiased when it comes to music as I can be,, and if you want proof here is my review of Madonna at Yankee Stadium. But there is doubting her pop music genius and while Lady Gaga may one day find herself in the same league, it sure hasn’t happened yet.

Amoeba’s ‘What’s In My Bag’ With Marshall Crenshaw

Mr. Crenshaw is a music connoisseur with a taste for jazz and oldies, so he picked an early album of Sun Ra, as well as a 50’s album of the gospel soul band the Staple Singers, the new album by jazz guitarist Nels Cline, some Indian Style heavy funk, ‘SitarBeat’ and the best of Buddy Collette,… but also Mitch Ryder’s autobiography, ‘Devil and Blue Dresses’, since the Detroit-native musician feels connected to the musical legacy of the city

LA Band Seasons’ Up To Release ‘Everything Changes’

They have emailed us their new single ‘Everything Changes’, the title track of their upcoming full-length, which starts like a Beatles song, but as soon as strings and keyboards wake up the tune literally jumps and bounces of joy. It grows fuller and fuller with energy and urgency as many instruments jump in the mix

Five years after “Hot Tub Time Machine” took us back to the 1980s a lot has happened: Mostly, three The Hangover movies, where the big concept, a missing day, morphs into a missing ten years, as Nick and buddy Lou (long with Lou’s long suffering son go back to the future to stop Lou’s murder

Kanye West, This Crazy God’s Vessel

joke about Kanye West all the time, but he must be the most divisive musician ever, people either love him or hate him, he sure polarizes people, however I just don’t get the coverage that this guy can receive. He comes up with the most trite title and everyone is talking about i, when it is just a name

‘Salad Days: The D.C. Punk Revolution’ Documentary

The myth of the D.C. Straight Edge is another thing the movie should clear up, it just started as a reaction against venues with age restrictions due to alcohol consumption, and punk teenagers just wanted teenagers to be able to attend gigs. Despite the fact that MacKaye has never wanted to be a movement (that would have been very un-punk) the term has pursued him to this day, to his greatest aggravation.

That Was The Week That Was: February 23rd, 2015

The outpouring of sorrow over the death of Leonard Nimoy is not, and I think I can claim this with absolute certainty, nothing whatsoever to do with his singing, no not even “If I Was A Carpenter” or, god knows, “Highly Illogical”. Even so, Spock is an instrument of rock and roll culture and his cultural significance, his Pan-Universal Humanism, will hopefully hopefully, live long and prosper.

Gregory Porter is having some 2015, a top 10 album in the UK is great, and the loud and intense approval of your some of the biggest names in pop music, Sam Smith for one, should make this a big gig, but singing a duet with Van Morisson on Van’s next album? That’s BIG. You can catch Gregory yourself, alongside rock nyc friend, bluesman Tomas Doncker, on Sunday afternoon

The picture is of rock nyc friend and B-52s fanatic Michael Malone and her royal Kateness.

Van Morrison’s Duets: Re-Working The Catalogue Album Arriving March 24th, 2015 Could Be A Goodie

I thought let’s pass on the Knopfler track but then noticed which song it was and Knopfler channelling the Chieftains might be excellent but even if it isn’t, surely a Bobby Womack duet alone is worth the price of admission, plus Mavis Staples, Gregory Porter, Georgie Fame, Taj Mahal… these are good singers, these are guys we can imagine giving Van a little bit of competition.
