Listen To Thee Oh Sees’ New Song, ‘Web’

I feel I have a special connection with John Dwyer, not because I know him but because I regularly see him running around the lake in Silverlake! He is a runner and I once tried to scream at him ‘I love your music’, he gave me a thumb up although I am not sure he heard what I said… yeap, he is no more living in mad-expensive San Francisco and I am happy to count him among my close neighbors.

In any case his band Thee Oh Sees is a real face-melting vision to see live, because of their mad energy and crazy psychedelia. I know the line-up of the band has evolved and changed during these last years, but they seem to have returned in full force with Dwyer’s new lineup including of course him on vocals and guitar,Tim Hellman on bass, Nick Murray on drums, Brigid Dawson on keyboard and tambourine and Chris Woodhouse.

The band is releasing a new album entitled ‘Mutilator Defeated At Last’ mixed by Chris Woodhouse and mastered by John Golden (Soundgarden, Melvins, Ty Segall) out on May 18th via Castle face, and this is the description going with the first track ‘Web’, shared on Soundcloud:

‘Here we have a new batch from Thee Oh Sees for your absorption – nine muscular tunes primed to pummel to. Last year’s Drop was more schizophrenic, ranging from heavy to whimsical and back – Mutilator Defeated At Last has more in common with the monolithic hugeness of Floating Coffin – with only two slight reprieves in heaviness this is a record made to be played loudly and that demands bodily sacrifice inherently. Despite the plutonium heavy feel, Thee Oh Sees continue to be omnivorous – synths and acoustic guitars expertly wind their way throughout like veins of gold through granite – any and all that stands in its way will be devoured and assimilated. This is the sound of a band doing what they do best, and it’s out on Castle Face Records May 18th.

Well, may be it is all this, I just think the title sounds like a comic book’s headline or a song from the Flaming Lips.

‘Web’ is a long piece of strangely tuned sonic universe, slowly building a creepy dance party with vibrating guitars going full surf-mode with alien-like sounds and Dwyer’s signature reverb vocals. It sounds a bit less noisy than some of their previous tracks, but I can see this one going totally out-of-control live, because Thee Oh Sees have to be seen live.

Here is ‘Mutilator Defeated At Last’ Tracklist:

01 Web
02 Withered Hand
03 Poor Queen
04 Turned Out Light
05 Lupine Ossuary
06 Sticky Hulks
07 Holy Smoke
08 Rogue Planet
09 Palace Doctor
