Hear Ye: what rock nyc is listening to 6-21-13
Power Trip”, an undoubted hit with Miguel, a guy I’ve underestimated, killing it on the chorus with a one liner that rules the world: ” Constant drinking and love songs”.

The band looked so serious, hardly cracking a smile during the whole time, concentrated on their upbeat fast-tempo songs, which made people dance in the store rows
This is amazing and cool and who the hell would have ever thought this would happen. Iman hob knobbing with Debbie Harry last month and she never even told him. That sassy dame. Starting in New Hampshire it looks like a great opportunity for me to get to Hampton Beach
Donwood may think that the world is doomed according, but he still hasn’t lost any hope to change it!
Doncker is the best played, West sounds best, Modern Hut the most consistent and Marling peaks the highest
I’m not the type to wonder what Joe would have done, it doesn’t matter. We lost Joe and the world is a much dimmer place. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is the lamest institution of all and holds no prestige in my eyes
It is amazing how little material there actually is. A handful of alnbums, some extended and that’s it really.
Like all those damn Cash Money kids, they be hating on nyc
Summer songs? First Blurred next Lucky all summer long, that’s my bet. Also, one other will be coming up soon, the Miley Cyrus, it will be the third and all summer long they will be at the top. Everything else is gonna be biting at their ankles!
I think I wear off albums way too fast. Sometimes they don’t last a week before I’ve completely moved on
I am going to see McLaughlin for the first time tomorrow. I own a 5 CD Davis set circa 1970, John played only one night but boy my boy, it stands so far out
They exploded in all directions, never stayed still but rather randomly moved against each other, like a pack of boiling molecules
Beckett’s allusion ties in with the whimsical feel of this song and really puts the icing on the cake
There was a musical memorial for Stanley on June 2nd and my friend Richard Davis was among those who paid his respects in a room full of movers and shakers
Sunday afternoon I am gonna see Femi Kuti and when is that over I am gonna dash down to Arlene’s Grocery (just off Ludlow Street) -one of the best rooms in the city by the way, and catch Marla’s 815pm show
Raise your hand if you think this is the most fucked up statement from a someone who shouldn’t be allowed to speak. Really Gene put a leash on your dog…err, cat.
I asked Bill Holdship, who wrote the liner notes to the extended Replacements reissues at the bands request, and Rob O’Connor, the Yahoo Music columnist and maybe the best rock critic around, to tell me what their favorite songs were.
She is like a female Hall and Oates with a dollop of Billy Joel circa An Innocent Man. At least that’s the best I can do with “Waiting For me” -a plainly awesome soul song
It is not that that Trent Reznor is old fashioned, it is rather that his innovations have been so built into EDM and hip hop DNA that he sounds old fashioned
Scott Disick’s Dream Comes True in the promo that I originally wrote for Kanye’s new record but not a lot was used: http://www.kanyewest.com
Yes folks, Tuesdays releases boiled down to a handful of songs… especially MIA!!!
Everyone hates him, he talks shit about everything, does not fear repercussion, creates music for himself until its time to ‘pay the rent’ then they pop out a hit. Interesting huh? All the haters are really just scared. He’s saying shit you don’t want to hear,
I was a senior in high school in 1983, busy with SAT tests and college applications and impending adulthood, so it was a good time to be reminded that girls just wanted to have fun
They were quite loud and a positive force was literally emanating from each musical fiber of their high-energy songs
Many places I have lived are not exactly live music meccas (ladies and gentlemen, I give you MANHATTAN, KANSAS) and I’d rather not skip meals to attend arena shows
I can’t get enough of the harmonies. When the instruments hit that discordant tone and it mixes with the perfect blend of voices, it’s chilling. The original version doesn’t quite have this same quality.
“We’re just highlighting facts
about things that are happening, and things
that affect us”
She despises him for not taking any action regarding some of his fans, making allusion to the whole ‘Cut For Bieber’ trend that occured on Twitter at the beginning of this year
Character, stamina, humor, plot, believablity, everything is thrown away for the sole purpose of another action sequence
Yes, that’s what a great live performance can do for you. Performing three Frank Sinatra covers, Legend changed me from a decades long hater to an intense admirer and if Love In The Future, his first album in five years, is halfway decent (and that is no promise mind) consider me so there when he plays in town. Otherwise, count me in on Beady Eye, Mavis Staple, maybe Wale, definitely Hawthorn Heights, definitely India Arie. But Smith Wesson, I prefer em when they were getting thrown out of Broolyn nightclubs for underage drinking.
End of the weekend music and after watching Viva Las Vegas it’s been all Kweezy all the time. Three days of listening to the album and it becomes clear that the first four songs reach a heigh of consistent industrial strength power that the rest of the album doesn’t quite pay off, and then it ends with a reminded that he can turn on the hit making whenever he feels like it. “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” -he killed it at Gov’s Ball.
After his songs there is always his family and watching his 22 year old daughter watching her father as they joined together for a handful of songs, was revealing enough for any set
The Doors’ thin drummer looked happy and in good spirit when he sat down at the signing table around 6 pm and stayed there for a long time; when I left an hour later, he was still signing everything that was presented to him, books, vinyl, posters, drumsets,… He took a short break at one point and was regularly standing up to wave at the crowd,
It’s an unnervingly simple, aggressive, it’s his leanest and most direct effort
I’m hoping for a little something more from this Austin Texas band. I want them to be huge (no pun intended) but they need to steer in a less depressive direction and mix it up a bit. I’m not implying ‘walking on sunshine’ happy, but for Gods sake stop being so beaten.
So is it another way for Kanye West to push the envelope? However, he has to be aware that the novel destroyed the 80s music – I have heard that Phil Collins never forgave Ellis – but West’s new ‘Yeezus’ is probably lyrically strong enough to stand up next to the bloody-gory violence of the novel.
“Mahalia Jackson: The Power and the Glory”? That’s the 1997 bio of the greatest Gospel singer of all time, and Summerstage will be presenting a screening of the movie on Saturday. Along with performances by Della Reese and the mind boggling Joshua Nelson. If you have never seen Redman, he is a thrilling live performer who would blow the roof off Summerstage if it had a roof.
The Beady Eye is surprisingly good, I mean we all thought it was TV On The Beady Eye, but it isn’t really at all! It’s kinda like prog-English rock. Very very impressed. I would be much more interested in Black Sabbath if they were playing Manhattan.
Leah McFall is the leader of the Voice UK pack and she does have amazing range, her high notes are sky high. Somewhere along the way “Grime” became rapping with an English accent. And the rest of this is the usual suspects.
The Kris Kristofferson song at the top of the chart is a brilliant piece of aphorismatic self evidence and a call that should echo through the ages: “Life is the question and life is the answer and God is the reason and love is the way”. Very true but onbly instinctively.
This works in ways Watch The Throne didn’t. Throne was a victory lap, Yeezus is back to ground zero only now he doesn’t really care
Even though it was dark, you could see him grinning as the crowd cheered. Following him were Justin Aufdemkamp, Ryan Neff, and B.J. Stead. Last but not least, was Levi Benton, having transformed from the quiet man I interviewed to a metal god. They automatically ripped into their first song, and they didn’t hold back a thing.
Edward didn’t realize he could paint either till, inspired by his brother Gerard (the man who created the AC/DC logo) he decided to at least try.
I should be raving about how it gave me a migraine and how I wanted to slice my eyelids off but I can’t. Its a classic song done in a classic manner by and old dude and some whipper snappers in a pretty setting. It could be an advertisement for the Park service its so clean.
What? McCartney has turned electronic? Apparently he has! The 70-year-old Beatle will never finish to reinvent himself and he has just recorded with Italian artist Bloody Beetroots, ‘Out of Sight’, an epic electronica number which premiered on Rolling Stone this Friday.
Then, a little before 10 am, I read a tweet from Thom Yorke himself, announcing that several indie music stores were giving away tickets with the purchase of the album. I decided to rush as fast as possible to the nearest one, Vacation Vinyl. I got there only a few minutes after the tweet was sent, and there were just a few people online, I was number 7, my hopes were suddenly very high
“You think I’m over the hill, think I’m past my prime? Let me see what you’ve got, we can have a whomping good time”
This is Jason Isbell’s week no doubt and the album was good to start and has been growing on me ever since. Once past that, Icona Pop are firmly on my radar right now and my appreciation for them has grown by leaps and bounds. Marshall has a song of the year, and Daft Punk, Matt whipley and especially Robin Thicke have songs of the summer.
The great thing about having been a drunk is that if you were good when you were a drunk you are gonna be great when you sober up. Isbell, who moved from keyboards to guitar years ago, is now a full blown sober singer songwriter writing self aware self portraits and on this his fourth solo album, to a just about perfect fine point on “Super 8″… and others. ALBUM OF THE WEEK – A
“The bloody trains are bloody late, you bloody wait, you bloody wait…” JCC is always a blast! DBT is an Isbell classic, and 3 – 7 are highlights from new album releases, I got a tix to NIN and the two Kweezy’s aren’t released yet but “Bound 2 ” is as mainstream as anything he has ever written and he could have easily pushed it as a first single.
