William Beckett released a new song called “Benny & Joon” and it’s wonderful.  The man has a real talent for creating new and exciting sounds with a synth, and this just furthers that.  I was instantly hooked, and the guitars packed an unexpected punch.
His voice gets better every time I hear him. Â The way that he begins the tune in his lower register and brings it up with the second verse is beautiful and preps for the chorus’ energetic melody. Â It’s like the man knows exactly how to release a song and when; this is a very summery song and it’s gorgeous.
“Now I don’t feel that depressed. Â Now they got me strapped down in the chair but as long as you’re beside me, babe, I don’t care. Â I guess it’s been a really fucked up year.” Â There’s a certain power with those lines that has a quality so lovely and pure that it makes the song that much greater. Â The chorus is so perfect; “We know what they don’t know. Â We see what they can’t see. Â They say we’re crazy- okay, well maybe that’s true. Â We know who we are now, we know who we are now so just leave us alone.” Â It’s an anthem without it being cheesy or lame. Â It’s definitely a good jam to play at Warped and at bigger shows when he gets there.
“Take a look at all the white coats in the room staring at us sideways like we’re Benny and Joon. Â Yeah, we saw that movie, too.” Â Beckett’s allusion ties in with the whimsical feel of this song and really puts the icing on the cake. Â As a whole, it’s adorable, and I can’t wait to see him play it live.
