Sneak Peaks: New Album Releases 10-15-13
The thrill here is Linda Thompson’s new album, except for that song earlier this year “Never A Bride” and it was a killer, we haven’t heard anything new in years. Maybe we will get a tour out of it!!!

Haunting Me – Mary Lee’s Corvette – There is still blood on the tracks on this masterpiece, a beauty of rare emotional depth starts ling singer songwriter confessional becomes country and morphs into a Jimmy Webb song on the chorus – A
“The entire Nine Inch Nails production was not only industrial in sound, but industrial in operation. With all troubles attended to, the band was free to play as they please, Reznor starring as the grooving goth pop diva of a tainted dream. The bouncers themselves were bouncing to the arresting rhythms.”
Meanwhile, who exactly did play? Just about every living star from the era… no Verlaine, no Hell, no Patti (though yes to Lenny Kaye), otherwise a clean sweep!!! I wanted to see Jahn, Lenny, Bebe, Richard Lloyd, Tuff Darts… really everybody!
“The band had no stage presence, Simmons was a little bit of a mess, and there was no real passion. It’s like they had big-rockstar mentality, when they don’t have the luxury to at all.”
Q: “If I’m remembering correctly, for a while, you guys dropped the “!” and just went as “Panic At the Disco.” Why’d you go back to stylizing it as “Panic! At the Disco”?” A: “Honestly, we just printed it without the “!” one time, and people flipped out.
The entire CMJ Festival, from October 15th – Octoebr 19th, is gonna be fun as always and the line up is dishy with even rumors of a secret Arcade Fire gig in Brooklyn. But for me, the afternoon KEXP radio shows are the keepers. Tell me a betetr way to spend your afternoon than with Au Revoir, Simone or Eleanor Friedberger?
his parents who got divorced when he was 7, his stepfather who was beating the hell out of his mother, and his kindergarten teacher telling him he was smart, suddenly he dropped a bomb which almost stays unnoticed in this flow of talking:
Yeah, I know early Miley is the pix, but she has topped both the UK singles and albums chart for the week, so what do you do? But Lucy Spraggan deserves it.
Two excellent songs here haven’t been released in the States yet, Rudimental pal John Newman and last years model Conor “Las Vegas Girl” Maynard, have both dropped first rate tracks in the UK as good as their very best
Nobody Wants You When You’re Down And on – Bobby Womack – aaaah, yeah, Bobby really nails it on this one. They don’t make soul like this any more though Womack is at City Winery in December so he should be playing it like this – A
Packing 20,000 middle-aged white people (the Eagles spent the evening discussing their history from the stage and on pre-taped segments. They performed almost thirty songs in a show that lasted over three hours. I wasn’t sure if I was watching a concert or serving a sentence.
I would mention the Gospels as another influence on the play, the way in which the time between the death of Christ and the writing of the Gospels changed the story into myth.
I saw both bands this summer, and thought that Morris-Dukowski’s Flag was much better than Ginn’s Black Flag, but this is beside the point. In any case, when they all have been in the same band, I can’t understand how one of them could own the name
The writer above is Ryan Leas and with all due respect, and who wants to pick on some scribe trying to get paid by word and running em up, but damn, could he be a bigger blowhard?
We should readjust our values because in the web-based world we are told that monopoly is good for us. The major record labels usually siphon off most of this income, and then they dribble about 15-20% of what’s left down to their artists. Indie labels are often a lot fairer
Danny’s second strong release in a row is a companion piece to an album it has nothing to do with: Tyler, The Creator, Wolf, and like Wolf it is about life after fame and like Wolf, it is all drugs and rap, but this is a consistently well rapped album, smart as hell rhymes
Pop’s Love Suicide – Stone Temple Pikots – If it was easy to write glam grunge pop masterpieces like this, why has nobody, definitely including STP, been able to replicate it – A
A cheerful attractive vision of female power, she leads us on singalongs with “Where Are The Freaks” and “Dismissed With A Kiss” and then, in a new song, “Liar Liar”, she wails along to the sax and it is invigorating and awesome
The band sounded real good but they didn’t quite ignite, the closest they got was “Poor Man” but even with Ambel playing the harp for the first time ever they never quite got us there.
He is a restless performer
When I get the chance (or if I can’t hand it off to someone else) to call New York clubs and figure out exactly what the booking practice is. Aren’t there rules about this stuff? Where’s the Unions?
Just think about the joint thats residents have included Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Leonard Cohen, Patti Smith and punk rock love birds, Sid and Nancy. Iconic is an understantement and now fat cat high brows can own a flat in the building
I would not care at all if it were not for these shouting bras,… move over Katy Perry! But what’s the hell Charlie Sheen and Mel Gibson are doing there? I see it’s supposed to be edgy, super violent, with sexy women and controversial actors trying to scream louder than Gaga, good luck with that!
So the news that he is playing the Theater at MSG on November 25th, 2013, couldn’t be bigger for us Vanheads. His daughter Shana is opening but let’s not hold that against her and wonder just want he will be bringing to the table
Winner – CBGB Fest – The leap forward from 2013 to 2013 has been huge and the Thursday night gig at Bowery Electric, 30 bands between 7pm and 4am, is already legendary (Jahn Xavier is documenting who played and we will share it once it’s finished).
Good Morning Good Morning – Mickey Dolenz – Off the Remember album if you think a flute has no place on the Lennon classic, think again ; Dolenz is in superb voice and it captures some of the timed weirdness of Lennon’s take on the straight life – B+
Ms. Copeland’s high energy set included tunes from her 2013 Grammy Award nominated album “33 & 1/3” (“Lemon Pie” and “Somebody else’s Jesus”) as well as some of her classics (“Dirty Water”,”Never goin’ back to Memphis” and “Beat up Guitar
You would think that fans can understand a cancellation if the guy is sick or the weather has destroyed the equipment, I mean I totally would! However, the band took the time to post a very long letter on their website to explain all the reasons why bands cancel shows…. Illness, mental illness, weather conflicting schedules… Why?
“The upper halves of their bodies were around the house, in the windows, playing to the woman inside, presumably a mother. Their hearts were closer to her. However, their legs were going around, pursuing a music career, or a bigger life outside of the mother. They’re half and half, caught between their mothers and their booming success.”
Pearl Jam have been well loved and have certainly had their moments, and as far as mainstream rock bands are concerned you can out every Linkin Park on the planet on one side, and they wouldn’t be as good as Pearl Jam, but still, they’re dodgy and half hearted, on record any way
anyway hasn’t Sinead O’Connor written one hundred open letters to straight this girl up? Four letters actually, but it seems like one hundred because I must have read about this sooooo many times I have lost count. Then the worst happened when the omnipresent and always-opinionated Amanda Palmer wrote to Sinead in defense of Miley
C’mon y”all leave the geezer alone. He’s just trying to pay some bills off his former career, its like making fun of your grandpa or something. Just smile and let him do his thing. It won’t be long now.
As Jahn’s words pinpoint, there is a sense of a time and place long gone but also returning in all its splendor and helped in no little part by the CBGB’s Festival
However, to add to the buzz, Strait has announced that this is his farewell tour, a terrifying though that he would leave us to the tender mercies of Luke Bryan.
Substitute – The Who – Before all the heaviness of Tommy or even A Quick One, or even “My Generation”, there was the distilled fury of this teenage misogy and displacement. Freud would have a lot to say.
Something’s Gotta Give – Frank Sinatra – Sings Jimmy Mercer, and this one swings hard and it is one of those arrogant songs that Sinatra excelled, it swings from a chandelier and is all seduction and smart cracks and finger snaps – A
In the end, how much difference is there between “I Dream Of Jeannie” weightlessness and “Gravity”? It’s the same stuff floating in the same space to the same end. And I saw it in 3D and IMAX.
Sure the trailer is very short, but the whole thing runs like a super production of a retro sci-fi movie soundtrack-ed by some Daft Punk-meet-the-Bee-Gees’ leftovers. It seems to be a big deal, all the big publications are mentioning it, I just hope they give a break to this faux-disco on the rest of the album.
This latest release, due out in spring, contains a boatload of cover tunes and well.. it could be quite cool. You may be aware of the Johnny Depp ‘Revolution’ collab, but there will be much more. The problem is their being pretty cagey about it.
Phillip Chevron – One of the original Irish punks, the guitarist started with the great Radiators From Space before graduating to the Pogues , the guitarist was with the band back in 2011 for their last concerts.
If ever a year seemed to be about a scene that was waiting to happen, this would appear to be that year. This time three years ago, the pop scene was exploding at its seams, as was hip hop and indie
People are right, Timberlake should have cut the two album drift to a sharp singleminded single. Even so, this isn’t close to as bad as they naysayers claim
Kiki deserved more than one hit but if she was gonna have only one hit this was the one to have, a chart bursting rush of Adult pop that rushed the brightest colors of glam into a pure sensibility – A
What’s the point in living in New York City if you aren’t gonna go to Film Festivals. And better this that our two or three biggies which are getting a little bit up there, right? They have the strength but we have the numbers.
Jay Sweet, the organizer of the Newport Folk Festival, who has decided to bring the West Coast version of the festival on the Santa Monica Pier because ‘it’s an iconic place that’s not a traditional music venue’, had warned Conor, ‘no rock songs, only folk ones!’ Conor certainly followed the rules, and played lots of his most touching tunes
Step Inside doesn’t work because of the voice, Kevin has a good voice for sure, and it doesn’t work because of the bass, though the band as a whole goes song after song of strength and determination, it works because the songs are killer
On stage, they have a charming presence and a great assurance, way beyond their very young age: 20-year-old Klara sings lead for most of the songs while playing guitar and 23-year-old Johanna plays keyboard while constantly harmonizing with her sister, giving an ethereal dimension to their compositions
Charging Cheri $200 to play? That’s really mean spirited and petty. You own a handful of clubs in Manhattan, why are you shaking down Cheri Dahl for $200? So much for punk rock lives on the Lower East Side.
But depression, sorrow, the infiniteness lightness of blueing, the pain of fame gam?. These are the colors of modern r&b and superheroes. Thanks, guys.
