Tough night at the ol EL n Gee, a restless crowd and a mediocre showing for openning acts made me antsy to say the least. It was finally time for Title Fight to take the stage and suddenly the wait was perfectly worthwhile. I had never seen them live before but absolutely love them recorded, so I was making my way forward in the crowd to watch them in all their glory. After being disappointed by Balance and Composure’s set, I knew that TF would raise the bar and make the show worthwhile. I was spot on in that assumption.
As soon as they stepped on stage, they ripped into “Make You Cry”, a beautiful song off their latest album, “Floral Green”. This dark and depressing ballad was covered by loud guitars, heavy drums, and the scratchy vocals. “Can’t fight this feeling of death when it wraps its hands around your neck” was the first line of the evening, and though gloomy and sad, it certainly didn’t feel that way. It was more uplifting if anything, because of the positivity radiating out of the crowd. The pushing forward forced a few people onto the stage, and the crowdsurfers clocked pretty much everyone. However, it didn’t matter because we were all too enthralled by the insanely talented musicians before us.
“My father said don’t be so scared” was uttered and even I pushed further into the crowd, trying to get closer to the band. “27” is probably one of my favourite songs of theirs and hearing them play it live was surreal. The sense of community that’s so hard to find enveloped everyone in the room and though there was moshing or crowdsurfing, everyone was mindful of those around them. We were all careful.
I absolutely lost it during “Head In The Ceiling Fan”. Though everyone was calm during this song, the audience was even louder than the band. It was a beautiful moment, and one you don’t get to often at shows. The calm didn’t last for long though, as the band went into “Shed” and the energy was brought up again.
It was my last show at the El ‘N’ Gee, since it’s closing down. Having Title Fight be the last band I see there feels absolutely fitting because it’s a show I’ll never forget. The kind and careful crowd, the amount of people singing along, the flawless sound of the band and their Godly talent.
