The Silversun Pickups', ‘Bloody Mary (Nerve Endings)’
a loud song with a big sound and bright vocals, that does not exactly remind me anything they have done before; but since everyone is saying the band is not repeating itself, it makes sense

don’t know where this Elliott Smith’s picture was taken but I know it is French photographer Renaud Monfourny’s work, and there are a few other ones in color, taken on these same stairs.
This take on a video game, wait or is it Hunger Games, wait.. or is it Deer Hunter or is it wait.. So poorly excecuted that we have no idea what theyre trying to say? Yes, thats it. This over budget GI Joe wanna be ‘Nam crap is laughable and pathetic. Im embarrassed for them.
Notice anything? No “Please Please Please”. Really. If you are gonna play for less than an hour at least through in one of your best songs
Jack Black and Kyle Gaas are back. Bigger rounder balder and bad asser than ever. Not only are they touring this summer but they have a nice 6 minute video of nonsense to share with us as well. Long live bad comedy acts.
Even if you weren’t aware of Womack in the 1960s, you knew the Stones cover of “It’s All Over Now”, and even if youw eren’t paying that keen an eye to 1970s soul men no named Green, you knew “Across 110th Street”.
I guess middle aged movie reviewers considered gratuitous female breasts and hot bodies, male and female grinding, misogynistic. Why? I dunno why. I think it is fun.
If Genghis Khan listening to Iron Maiden and Adolph Hitler listening to U2 is a cheap shot, I am only suggesting that both villains would be attracted to sounds as big as their egos.
Really excellent rap and pop mix with a bluesdy backbone. The little girls who dig him should dig this, the little girls who are dropping him for One Direction will have a harder time. And the rest of us? Grade: A-
Lyrics apart, the music of ‘Port of Morrow’ sounds extremely familiar, it is as fresh and charming as The Shins’ music has always been, there is brilliance, guitars layered with keyboards, wordless harmonies, inventive jumpy noises, earworms and big choruses, yes all this, with a twist.
I guess I am happy to get anything at all on the big screen. Maybe, as a framing reference, maybe as a cultural check and balance, But it still feels like there simply isn’t enough room to tell the story right. It’s like ODB isn’t big enough.
Buick was the car your grandpa drove. Get in the Buick go on down to the Sears and get a pair of pants. Safe, dependable and boring.
Usually when an artist covers a song from a genre very different from their own, the cover has the same basic instrumental sound but with the covering artist’s own style. I saw no evidence of that in this tragic cover.
‘I will come to St. Petersburg to speak up for the gay community, to support the gay community and to give strength and inspiration to anyone who is or feels oppressed.’
For them, some sort of music is always on, on their computers, phones or… from a noise in the street, they will listen to anything as long as it has some sort of rhythm,… and they want to listen to it all the time. Music is like oxygen around them, it is vital and part of their surrounding, but it is also regarded as some background element,
The show has no actual start date but will begin this summer. I really like Cyndi and I’m not so sure this was a good idea. We have Gene Simmons, we had Ozzy and more. Will she have enough audience to make it interesting?
Where’s nyc? Where’s somewhere not on the tail end of Jersey? The Live Nation presale is on Wednesday. If I get the code I will share it.
My point in self-evident, it is arrogant, self-righteous stupidity to NOT take context in mind in the use of offensive words. If hip hop is going to remove the whip sting of racism in the word “nigger”, by respelling and redefining it, from a euphemism for sub-human slave, to “brother” than why don’t they want it used that way.
‘I’m more focusing on my other things, like my shoe line, I’m designing for that,’ Fergie explained. ‘I’m really getting to work from home, and I’m loving it
Small bands were playing 12 sets in three days and were entirely overshadowed by Bruce Springsteen, Fiona Apple, Lil Wayne and Jay-Z. So not only is everybody exhausted, nobody got what they came from.
Her little monsters, the cast outs of society who simply cannot tell when their leader has sold out will hold all sort of raves in her honor. She really is the patron saint of lost souls.
The Madonna is way, way, way better than I thought it would be, the new Justin and Pitbull songs are excellent, Macy, Lionel, Justin all on their game… at first listen!
The Zenith Beast reissues have been systematically rocking my world for a couple of days and over and above that I’ve been readying myself for the Of Montreal gig on Friday night.
‘the film will include exclusive archival photographs, concert footage and interviews with dozens of bands, artists, label owners, zine publishers and others who helped mold and nurture DC’s underground community during this inspired decade of music.’
thought maybe you would play a quick gig in nyc as long as you were in town. Maybe Roseland, wishful thinking Beacon Theater. And along with an AMEX presale I would have been so there. Well, six months later and still you are elsewhere.
The song is an exhilarating, super-upbeat, 80s-influenced tune off their debut self-titled album, and knowing how energetic and especially funny they are on stage, they could not have found a more comical way to express their sibling attachment.
Adele couldn’t make it so word is she settled for Lady Gaga to guest with her instead. To icons in the gay dance movement all these two would need is Madonna and Liza Minelli and it would be a glow stick party time.
Stereogum has one minute preview of ‘Horn Of Plenty’, the orchestral track composed by Win and Régine, which is supposed to be the ‘national anthem of the fascist Capitol’, as Win explained.
Well pad the floor and get the safety harnesses out. Steven Tyler and the boys are about to hit the road and if things go as per usual, some ones gonna be falling off the stage sometime real soon.
If you do nothing else, buy Larry’s stupendous Feeding Lions To The Christians and the Fussbudgets where has it been all my life? Hog Wash! Both of these albums are lost gem pop rock gems of the first orde
Television is becoming a musical desert. Rare performances for the armchair brigade. It saddens me since there were so many bands that I discovered via television during my youth.
it is like a mix of “The Truman Show” and “Survivor” with the lamest heroes and villains on earth. With nobody to much give a shit about it drags for a coupla hours and then stops and even the ending isn’t such a rush. Lawrence is lousy in the lead, and her love interest is beyond cipheric. He isn’t there at all and has all the passion of, I dunno, somebody with no passion.
We ended up not doing anything more for a couple of reasons, including Rod’s busy solo schedule and his Vegas commitments, which is why we brought in Mick [Hucknall] for a few dates.”
Kevin Barnes newbie, Paralytic Stalks, is a downer, but a cool downer. Just hope Solange shows up on Friday as Of Nontreal turn Webstar Hall into a raucous party.
Sometimes I forget how big Weller is in the UK -too much of the time he is just the Godfather of Punk, a younger Pete Townsend or something. In the UK he has a vibrant, conitnuing career. Actually, he does in nyc as well.
Here is a question for you pop pickers: if “Part Of Me” was Katy’s first single, how would it be doing? Yeah, I agree. It is really lousy and it sails in on the video, the beat, the divorce, the Grammys and jer fan base
Violence – Cam’ron – Off his masterpiece D.D.E., he is a staccato death threat featuring ODB at his most threatening. The album itself is a long responde to Biggie. Grade: A-
There was a rivalry at the time that got many a fist fight started. As someone who did time in both the Boston and the New York scene I can tell you first hand that Boston had the most psychotic scene of all.
‘Slowly to the Shadows’ is precisely a little on the creepy-spooky side, slowly expanding its dark sound for 4 minutes and half with Carpenter’s baritone vocals backed up by J. Explosive’s sexy drumbeats.
So what’s up with Notorious B.I.G.? I know he’s legend, I know he died young- that’s it. Til I was introduced to the song “Juicy” a story of the rise of a boy who went from nothing to wealth.
I guess there certainly is a fascination about such a beauty and the beast coupling, but I still wonder how does Manson do it? He actually looks uglier when he doesn’t wear heavy make-up
So nobody wants to distribute his documentary? What a surprise! But it is in fact strange he cannot find anyone interested by an Elliott Smith project, he was definitively not a huge star, but he has a strong cult following
With all due respect, when you get to Patti Smith you’re about two steps away from Pete Seeger.
”We need another musical revolution, which has got to come from the roots upwards. I’m waiting for that to happen, for the younger generation to shake it up again because it fucking needs it.”
RUN DMC’s kid 17 year old Diggy is thorough on this soul hop album of intense beauty, smarts and prettiness. I am not crazy about Diggy’s voice, but the songs are all the bomb, especially “88” and “Unforgiveable Blackness” and thematic he worries about the devolution of the Black American dream. Grade: A-
Working up to my week in albums column, I tripped over two new excellent rappers. Both Digy and Baze are serious stuff. Diggy the better rapper, Baze with the better pop instincts.
Two guys and three back up musicians playing blues and rock but mainly blues, one of them moves the other one sits behind his drumkit center stage and bangs em hard. And they performed for three quarters of an hour, then the three musicians left the stage, and they played a s duo and then all five played together.
An overlong hour song set was more than a taste but even from a distance the band had an excellent dynamic, seldom jamming, always at service to the songs, and with a pretty good leader in Turner, they had problems making an impression.
It should be simply amazing, a fusion between the cold from Sweden and the heat from the Sahara-Malian desert, although José González’s family is actually from Argentina and his music has always cultivated a unique hybrid form of hypnotic krautrock and Afrobeat
It is as predictable as I thought it was, and it is very sad in a way. It shows she was not clean as her supposed friends had pretended she was. She was still using
