M. Ward is the biggest fucking pussy on earth but, damn, if he doesn't have his moments. Of every ten songs he writes, 8 should be taken out and shot and 2 will be just fabulous.
Which leads me to his new album A Wasteland Companion, It is released on April 10th and streaming on NPR as we speak and, yeah, it is kinda draggy. The writer at NPR called it music for transistor radios and exactly. Like his song "One Life Away", everything seems a little old out of time, out of synch and somewhere out their in the distance.
It is an odd contradiction, I keep on writing how much I hate him and keeping on falling for his songs.
Most of the album is as bad as I thought it would be, but a third is really great. "Crawl After You" sounds like it crawled outta the early 1950s -sorta borderline rock and roll era. A handful of others have caught my attention and the "I Get Ideas" cover is better than the last two She And Hims albums.
If I was a betting man, I'd bet it is gonna end up a solid B+.
Which makes it just one more reason to hate the guy.
