In the terrible “Rock Of Ages” movie, they go out of their way to mock 1980s boy bands, but in all sincerity, Culture Club and Wham were better than any metal band of the 80s with the exceptions of Van Halen, Metallica and Guns N Roses. Just to put it all in perspective for you.

The newly released Live at Montreaux was part of the tour in support of the band’s second album, and it includes tracks from both records. Since I never had a chance to see them live I couldn’t tell ya how they were with the stage presence.

Spider Bags has a new album to be released on Paul Finn’s Odessa Records, and, along with the Autumn released new Titus Andronicus, it is the rock and roll event of the year. Here is what the press release says: “It’s called Shake My Head and is out August 7th. It’s a truly awesome rock record, recorded in Memphis, TN and featuring a cast of characters pulled out of the Memphis garage rock scene.”

The simplistic beat with the electronic backing seems oddly un-Deathcab. Gibbards vocal still is one of the best story telling tones of all time and this version takes the song to a place it never once was.

‘Fjögur Pianó’ is the last song on the Icelandic band’s last effort ‘Valtari’, and it is also the most stripped down, a desolated piano going on for almost 8 minutes, with a more intense climax towards the end… in a few words, it is not something to cheer you up, but it is quite typical of Sigur Rós’ usual soundscape.

Hot Knife – Fiona Apple – With its Burundi bottomless drums like a tribal cry of desire leading the way, Apple gets right down to the business at hand: sex. Ultimate song off her excellent new song leads you out singing but… where’s the piano? Grade: A
It was a quiet lo-fi, almost intimate affair, with a delicate and soft drumming, a sweet acoustic guitar, some dance-y rhythms and often three-voice-male-female harmonies. They started with a minimalist instrumentation, and then, little by little brought more people and more instruments into play.
Praise the Lord and pass the soy spread my hero Morrissey is heading to the United States this fall and is actually coming to my state. This alone is cause for amazement. Who the hell comes here?
Whitley has that old time passion for rock music, and could discuss it all day between changing his one year olds diapers!!! But how good is he? Pretty excellent if the acoustic guitar break on the overwhelmingly moving and awesome “Calling All Gods” is anything to go by. These is a soaring big time rock anthem but it isn’t a self reflected glorifying song, at 8 minutes plus it takes its time to make its point.
Beth Ditto, who embodies her lyrics of “i have faced my fears, now i can move in the right direction”. She just glows with the joy of someone who’s moving on from past turmoil and is, well, headed in a new direction.
The album is good, the song is awesome and Samantha Urbani is soooo hip (check the video below of her getting a lap dance) and cool that she is One Direction’s resident bad boy Zayn Malik. WHich makes her the envy of half the girls in the US of A.
All this talking about illegal downloading, made me read and think about it. I understand the music industry wants you to feel guilty and to persuade you it is totally stealing and that you are the worst person on earth, depraving artists for doing it.
When speaking to most ‘hard’ rock bands they will offer up props to KISS in some way or another. A great example of KISS spawn is The Black Veil Brides- there is no doubt that KISS took music to new levels but really now, when can all this end?
“Rock Of Ages” would be much worse if their hit job was on a genre of music, or simply songs, that required talent to perform. From Journey to Poison, this is really naff material. And unless you consider the light voiced Tom Cruise doing a preposterously over the top “Pour Some Sugar On Me” anything but vaguely indifferent, you won’t take umbrage at the music.
Daniel Clarkson and Jefferson Turner sadly fail to mention the band at all. And with only 70 minutes to cover 300 characters, and spend 20 minutes on a game of Quidditch, it is hard to blame the game English duo. Indeed, the only thing you can blame them for is tailoring their show to preteens and my being miles away from the target demo.

I personally find her to be a walking nightmare and aside from a couple of good tunes- more flash than substance. Tony Bennett on the other hand and decades of croon behind him and pretty much owns his niche now that all the others have croaked
it is about the musicalness of words put together. Pauses, beats, repetitions, it is a rhythmic art form and because of that, because you are waiting to hear the words again, it bears repeating over and over.
Justin may be too young for this to be considered his grown-up album, more like Bieber Mach II they loved you when they were tweens can you keep them through their teens. Otherwise, the Apple is awesome.
Sorry – Friends – Best couplet in the Universe, wonder if they can pull it off live: “the situation’s not progressing and ethically it’s pretty fucked but every time i see you it’s just never enough.” Grade: A
I cannot say I was very impressed by her Pitchfork-proclaimed-best-new-music title, but there were so many fans pushing, trying to climb over the barricades, so many people backstage obstructing the view, so many police officers trying to contain the crazy fans that it was hard to tell.
Saturday night, the man is literally jumping for joy as the sold out room filled with teen to 20 something girls sang to, sure “We Are Young” but also EVERYTHING ELSE. EVERY WORD. RELENTLESSLY! Overnight sensation at 30 years old, Nate has spent the year watching fun. sell out room after room and, probably, wondering how the hell the dance rock band’s ode to failure, Some Night, became a feel good ode.
