Hey now, Deathcab For Cutie are alive and well right? Everything is ok. Well I am not sure but I have heard nothing to the contrary. Ben Gibbard seems to have reinvented himself (as is the trend with so many) he took his dumpy hipster persona and hit the marathon track dumping pounds and growing his hair- loosing the nerd glasses along the way.
Apparently in 2007 there was to be a great compilation and this just never made it on. So Gibbard tweeted it to his minions and its pretty damn moody. The simplistic beat with the electronic backing seems oddly un-Deathcab. Gibbards vocal still is one of the best story telling tones of all time and this version takes the song to a place it never once was. Covers can go two ways. It can be a karaoke self indulgent mess or it can enhance its original by offering up some unique element while maintaining the original integrity. That is exactly what is done in this version.
A soft and heart plucking version with a near psychedelic swirl to it at times it takes a good song and makes it better.
