Before we crow at the big 64, just remember, if you are really ahead of the pack, the band probably hasn’t broken yet! Also, it is kinda what we do, save you from being ahead of the pack by beating the world to it. Though perhaps apologies are in order.

Not With The Band: The Dematerialization Of Music

By Alyson Camus | August 30, 2015

America is all about capitalism, materialism and owning stuff, nevertheless people are currently falling for streaming services? In a way, streaming is the equivalent of renting your music, you don’t own anything anymore, and you share it with everyone. Isn’t it weird America?

Nirvana’s ‘Smell Like Teen Spirit’ Is By Far The Most Popular Song Of The 90’s On Spotify

By Alyson Camus | August 27, 2015

Of course there’s Spotify these days, and Daniels used this precious tool to produce the graph above and a few others, examining the popularity of the songs released from 1990 to 1999. Should we be surprised? Nirvana’s ‘Smell Like Teen Spirit’ is by far the most popular song of the 90’s getting more than 50 million play counts! Let’s hope Courtney Love doesn’t get any of this money.

Streaming On Apple Play Made Simple

By Iman Lababedi | July 19, 2015

The problem with Apple Play is it makes navigation a little too difficult. The service is a little counter-intuitive. But, the more I use it the easier I find it: just click “New”, use the search, double click “New to start the process again. Save to “My Music” if you want to download it and add to your music, when the merge works it will merge with your own downloaded songs.

Spotify And Universal No Closer To Deal

By Iman Lababedi | May 16, 2015

I once pitched a Spotify muckety muck on the central importance of upping their paid subscription base and they all but sneered at me. There was nothing more important for Spotify and all they did was fuck around for the past three years. They should have advertised everywhere all the time, if they had 50 million paid subscriptions today, they’d be paying their artists a lot more money

Music Distribution Wars

By Iman Lababedi | May 12, 2015

With the field to themselves, they should have advertised Spotify everywhere till it became part of the landscape, till the commercial was being spoofed on SNL, and they should have gone after paid subscribers day and night, instead they sat back and waited and while they were waiting, Apple woke up.

Spotify Is Worth More Than The Recording Industry, Tidal Is Sinking

By Alyson Camus | April 22, 2015

He seemed to strongly believe in it just a few weeks ago, but Kanye wouldn’t possibly be part of a failure, his ego wouldn’t possibly envision it…. I am so tempted to quote the old adage, rats always abandon a sinking ship? Did I just compare Kanye to a rat? Is that blasphemy?

Spotify – Goodfellas Linked

By Iman Lababedi | March 14, 2015

Spotify are the least customer friendly outfit in the world. You gotta problem with their app? Tough luck, go deal with it yourself, they don’t give a rat’s ass. It is one reason they might go under. They just don’t give a damn about the customer, you are simply, on your own.

Spotify’s End Game

By Iman Lababedi | March 13, 2015

The question is the same as to why Taylor Swift left Spotify, the advertising generated free plan. ITune’ “IPlay” won’t have it because they don’t need it, they have 800 Million clients with credit cards already. Spotify won’t give it up because they will lose their subscriber base

Labels Or Spotify? Which One Is Getting Most Of The Streaming Money?

By Alyson Camus | February 8, 2015

If you are like me, you may be a bit confused by the amount of bad press that Spotify receives… the streaming service is the bad guy, taking all the money, robbing the artist, this is what we were supposed to understand from the Taylor Swift story right? Well, we are totally wrong.

Pricing Kills Buying Music, Not Streaming

By Iman Lababedi | November 22, 2014

The battle over streaming is a battle over prices not distribution. I don’t care what anybody says, the average person does not want to spend $10 a month on a streaming service, it is too expensive, but if songs and albums were cheap enough they would get back in the habit of buying them.

Billboard To Include Song Streams In Ranking System

By Alyson Camus | November 21, 2014

So my question is, will this dethrone Taylor Swift because she has removed her music from Spotify? Bakula thinks it’s simply impossible: ‘No amount of streaming in the world could keep Taylor from No. 1,’ he declared… this girl is definitively way too powerful for my taste.

Not With The Band: The Way We Now Listen (And Skip) To Music

Is Bob Lefsetz Being Paid By Spotify Or Rhino? And Why Trust HIm On Taylor Swift??

By Iman Lababedi | November 12, 2014

Whether Swift is weak or powerful, Lefsetz’s actions towards her have been horrible. It feels like bullying and nasty nasty bullying and now we know it is for someone who is, at the very least, indirectly making money off, which makes it very hard to stomach.

Taylor Swift Pulled Her Music Off Spotify Because She Didn't Want To Embarrass Her Fans

By Alyson Camus | November 12, 2014

We never wanted to embarrass a fan’,… does he imagine we are gonna believe this? Fans are never embarrassed about free music and I have never heard anyone complaining about a song showing up on a streaming service!

Spotify Royalties Are Higher Than iTunes Revenues In Europe?

By Alyson Camus | November 7, 2014

Kobalt’s writers ‘earned 13% more from Spotify streams in Europe during the first quarter of 2014 than they did from iTunes downloads on the continent’… and this is a new trend as it was not the case during the third quarter of 2013 when writers still earned 32% more from European iTunes sales than from Spotify royalties

Taylor Swift Removes All Her Music From Spotify!!! Uh Oh…

By Iman Lababedi | November 3, 2014

It doesn’t really matter to me, I own all her stuff any way and if I didn’t and I felt like doing so it would take me two seconds to find it all on some piracy download website, the same one I got the early 1989 release.

Streaming Services Vs Mp3 Sales

By Iman Lababedi | October 15, 2014

The assumption is Spotify and ITunes are fighting for the same piece of the pie while it is blatantly clear that they aren’t at all. It is two different type of consumers. The average listener may buy “It’s All About The Bass” without considering for a second joining a streaming club

Spotify-Viacom Deal A Biggie for The Streaming company

By Iman Lababedi | July 31, 2014

It seems to me Spotify have settled themselves after last years somewhat stalled growth (and I still think they have passed on the older generation before they had to), are back to taking over the world of streaming by storm. And I believe this is a future of music distribution (which is what we are discussing, of course

The Most Streamed songs On Spotify July 14th – July 20th, 2014

By Iman Lababedi | July 29, 2014

I guess it is the guy in me, the lover of lists, but I find stuff like Billboard charts and here the Spotify streaing list interesting though, really, what here couldn’t you figure from the Billboard’s singles charts. Iggy, Sam Smith, Ariana, Nico, maybe Sia is a little higher than I thought would be, and maybe “Break Free” broke free a little earlier on Spotify than Billboard but what other surprises?

Hey, Maybe The MP3 Wars Aren't Over

By Iman Lababedi | July 26, 2014

The pitch to the vast majority of people is simple: it is the difference between owning your own house and renting your own house. Which would you prefer? If you could make the price palatable people would absolutely go back to buying, and a buying music ublic is the best thing possible for musicians.

Spotify's Most Popular Tracks

By Iman Lababedi | July 11, 2014

Lo these many years later though the question is, is Billboard, is album an single sales, irrelevant and the answer is, if viewed in a vacuum maybe so but as part of the streaming, youtube, etc etc Itunes, so on universe they are valuable. And I bet if you compared this list of most popular Spotify tracks and Billboard sales, they would be knocking on identical

Where 12-24 year Olds Find Their Music

By Iman Lababedi | July 9, 2014

It really is tough trying to figure out where to find new music but for all of youtube’s ability to make personal listening playlists, I don’t see how it works as a place to discover music. It seems more like a place to stream music once you have already discovered it.
