A huge disappointment, these are the guys Lennon chose to play with him on Double Fantasy, these cats are the real deal. I plan to see em next time they headline.

Special thanks to: Joseph and Donna McElroy, who I seldom get to see but who are family to me, and my co-editor Helen Bach who I admire greatly and tease mercilessly.
So I am staying home, and I am listening to her snore and wheeze, and reveling in the swampiest, most awful breath that ever emanated from an angel.
Mick and Keith came out for the Concert for New York City 11 years ago and played on their own. They’re well aware of the show and certainly have been invited to be part of it in any way, shape or form of the band
Thank You – Alanis Morrisette – If ever a song was worth stripping for, this is it. Yes, it sounds like a typical dirge at first but it is a grower and the piano gives it a pacing then leads it to its natural spiritual mantra self deep in the soul – Grade: A-
Bathroom Laughter – Pissed Jeans – What is it about PJ that makes you think they just plain can’t run away from themselves. They might want to be the “Holiday Inn” of hardcore, playing three times in a busy year and spending (three!) years between albums. But they are too damn good, and this will force them into becoming a working band. Their next album, Honey, is out next year and this first song is terrific. A tasty, blunt, piece of cynicism that, as my friend James Reynolds notes is reminiscent “of ivan x (ritual tension) when he was drumming for Swan” – Grade: A
Dan Fogelberg passed away from prostate cancer in 2007, yet will most likely taunt me from the grave every holiday season for the rest of my life. Nobody gets the last laugh on Dan Fogelberg.
Should I continue? They also did a map with the most popular acts based on the number of fans and other data, and boom! Los Angeles crushes New York once again with 3,547.9 against 1,967.6 for NYC in music popularity index (in millions)
Its a darker more sad type song but the tradition of it remains the same. Its a classic and amazingly enough it is 25 years old. Forgive me for saying this but i thought it older
This year the Weeknd, Frank Ocean and Miguel are three semi-experimental modern r&b guys mining a distractedly downbeat synth sound that would be Goth only there isn’t a guitar in sight and their entanglements is the horror of the banaility of lurve, I didn’t really like very much
So here is a guide to what it all means and remember, the future lies not in our stars but in ourselves (which has nothing to do with anything of course)…
Punk rock was proving to be an excellent singles medium, with The Buzzcocks and The Jam and The (non-Tom Petty) Heartbreakers undeniably making that point. An English nerd named Declan MacManus excited critics with his wordplay and craftsmanship. Disco and Fleetwood Mac ruled the Top 40 airwaves, while groups like Television and The Ramones and The Talking Heads were establishing a New York dump named CBGB’s
So much of this album is why Costello sucks 101: “Sparkling Day”, and the first verse has such promise but then it all comes back to the samey crappy bridge. “Oh well”, “Life Shrinks”, “My Mood Swings” -none of it is any good. Indeed, a quick head count gives you 7 winners out of 15.
Filmed in the hot Californian desert, the mini-movie is a blurry-busy fast-moving experience, hitting the road as fast as the chords on the electric guitar, letting us watch a confused and angry preacher in a cemetery, while Miles Solay’s voice is assaulting the delusion of the American dream with the help of some aggressive trumpet.
I know that he has died about a million times, like more than a cat. But between metal beams falling on his head, brain hemmorages and his diabetes its a wonder he can stop long enough to sing anything.
Wandered into the store during lunch. It looked like 1Ds career five years from now, more sales people than customers, and a kinda dusty day after Christmas vibe about the place. A 1D video is playing on monitors and some sale person is half heartedly singing along, the entire place is quiet and drastic.
Always on TV, always on the road, can’t go for a stroll in the park without a world of people demanding his time. You are one of many, the most important relationship of a young girls world is devastated thru absence and otherworldly fame. Forget about an Elektra complex, it is a haunting bizarre nightmare for a child.
The long wait is apparently over and if you go to Ticketweb you can pick a tix for Saturday, January 19th, 2013 at Cameo Gallery. This is a must see band in their element and I am overjoyed at the chance to finally see them live.
Pour It Up – Rihanna – The first keeper off the new one lays it out, “still got more money” is the rallying cry or is it “All I see is dollar signs”. There is a catchy downbeat and about as cheerful as Rihanna ever is, but everything she sings sounds like a hook, here the title sounds like a secret – Grade: A
I couldn’t help but sing really loud like an idiot and not care. I adore this song and I can’t even express how in love I am with it. It was such a good feeling yelling the lyrics next to others who were doing the same- it was a community.
The rousing chorus of ” kill, kill… kill the turkey’ pretty much sums up what has become of the holiday for appreciation. Uh oh dont get me started on that again or youll get a 300 word post on why you suck for eating meat.
There was a study published about a year ago that found out that strong right-handedness was associated with decreased liking of less popular musical genres such as bluegrass or reggae, and increased preference for more popular genres (indexed by recording industry sales figures).
Naill’s problem here is that he gave the game away, he was expressing his contempt not for women, not for his Mommy, but much much worse, for fans. How can he love something he just can’t see? How can he be loved by people who only want him to fulfill a ritual.
There is something about the Twilight series that sucks the lifeblood out of actors. I just saw Anna Kendrick in “Pitch Perfect”. She was also in “Up In The Air”. Terrific in both, in Twilight? Terrible.
A little later on the two are drunkenly singing Beatles songs before they move on to Presley and in Jagger’s exaggerated funning sneer you can here part of what Jagger himself is. He reveals his influence even as he laughs at it. One of the greatest music documentaries I’ve ever seen.
I received this email from rock nyc friend Tomas Doncker. The composer of “The Power Of The Trinity” and recent rock nyc interview subject Tomas Doncker. Surely just another step in his exceedingly exciting later career. And please note, the CNN interview will also be available on CC.Com after it airs.
The song has been submitted for an Academy Award in the best original song category, and everyone is suggesting she may win the Oscar as it is her first original composition for a movie; she recorded ‘Across the Universe’ for ‘Pleasantville’ and her song ‘Paper Bag’ was used for another Apatow production ‘Bridesmaids’
Let’s see he has eaten a live rat and guillotined his own head off and he’s done a bunch of stuff with snakes. But in the midst of all this showmanship he has created amazing anthems such as “I’m 18” and “Welcome To My Nightmare” along with the mega hit “School’s Out”.
American Music Awards 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award receipient Justin Biber… wait, it isn’t. Well, 18 teears is a long long time. Justin remebers when the President wasn’t a black dude, that’s how faw back he goes… anyway, no he is merely Artist Of The Year. Here are the winners with, more importantly, my opinion:
Arlo pays tribute to his late wife Jackie Guthrie: “There was this great love that we shared from the moment we met – a recognition – It’s YOU! And we would always return to it year after year, decade after decade and I believe life after lifetime.”
The problem with American Civil War, as opposed to WW1, songs is that as well as think we know the songs, we don’t really since there were (obviously) no contemporary recordings. Which means, not unlike classical music, there is no template. Except classical music was scored and scored to be played as scored and except for Marches, American Civil War songs were not.
Not much this week (or next actually), and while I have jopes for Bad Brains and Rihanna, I am filled with this dread over Kid Rock, not helped by the lousy single “Let’s Ride”, it is the album I am most interested in hearing.
Cool Zombie – Adam Ant – AIn’t this a kick in the head? After his frankly terrifying concert at Best Buy last October, the last think I expected was this Bo Diddley meets Ant Music piece of walking r&b. A triumphant return and as close to a walking dead as you’re ever likely to see – Grade: A-
I’ve never been to a show with as much crowd participation in my entire life. It was stunning. I think the band was a bit taken aback, too. An overwhelming amount of noise and motion and excitement ensued
Junior Brown plays guitar like a man that can orchestrate tornadoes. Stooped over his double electric and steel guitar, Brown played solos that sounded like Don Rich (of the Buckaroos) performing at the speed of light
Children of The Night, DJ Taco, Trash Talk and Mellowhype: West Coasts best brings it all night lone
Up in the Origami loft, Jesse Woods played a few of his peaceful tuneful songs showing all these influences and beyond, as I could hear a little bit of the Everly Brothers on ‘Ugly Dress’, just before the interesting chorus repeating ‘I’ll be waiting in northern California for you’. All I can say is that I didn’t see any of the tough side of the football player
It’s for the cash and I say get it while the gettting is good. What Im most interested in here is Spurlock doing a 3D. Seems so mainstream and ‘film maker-esque’ from a guy who digs up the disgusting.
He is a smart fellow but at the heart of the matter he realizes a secret: he got very very lucky but he doesn’t want to say so. So we get boiler plate stuff, sometimes from the actual time, about the mythic qualities of the Stones and Jagger in particular.
I got this off brooklynvegan who got it off Buzzfeed & Laughing Squid, who got it from the 2002, Kurt Cobain “Journals”. Boatloads of hardcore, punk and elder statesmen hard rock. Including the # 1 album. Plus some softer stuff like Toung Marble Giants which suggests where Kurt learnt his quiet.
‘I watched a concert of One Direction on the TV the other night, you know just to check [it] out, it reminded me very much of our early concerts, when we were pushed around among the audience and we would kind of float.”
Startling? Not particularly. Now Dylan’s singing on his current tour? That is startling, the title track off his new album? That’s startling? But this is just yucky. Not really art as we know and love it, more like a Photoshop extravanganza for a world at war. Or something like that.
This video occured during a taping of the show when the cast and crew performed a “Flash Mob” “Call Me Maybe” to the surprise of audience and director. As Sheldon puts it: Bazinga
I don’t get the Bruno Mars song at all, I thought it was like Usher after he gave up trying to be the next Michael Jackson. Wait a second, McFly broke up last decade, what are they doing back together? No wait, let me guess…
No shockers here, or maybe there is. The Grrreatest hits got in the charts? So did Strauss? And why is Lana and E back in there. And who is Aldie Boe??? No, wait, let me guess. But One Direction isn’t a shocker.
Burning Airlines Give You So Much More – Brian Eno – One of his greatest achievements, this strange tale about a girl who leaves him for China tracks a triumphant synth motif that is choice Oriental and yet nothing like it.Grade: A+
The set was heavy on their latest effort, the politically charged ‘Generals’, whose title song is a bluesy call for revolt with lyrics like ‘I need a political job/In a blue collar town/So I can pay my rent/When the music is on/I get my best blood drawn/But I haven’t made a dollar yet’
Even a hardcore Conor Oberst fan such as yours truly found the L.A. setlist from the solo show Alyson covered earlier this year a little obscure, fan unfriendly if you will, and this despite the show ending with the great “June On The West Coast”. Much much better is this setlist from his October 3rd gig in Pomona, Ca
This girl seems to embody racy classic Hollywood, as she just played Elizabeth Taylor and is staring in this upcoming sexual noir thriller, ‘The Canyons’, written by Bret Easton Ellis…
Sitek is a talented fellow, for his sins he produced the Scarlett Johansen album and Foals album, but both of them are kinda mood albums, and while TVOTR can rock, they can’t rock the same way young Liam can. They aren’t roar of rock and roll Limey style guys
