I am lost in this Nirvana-Kurt Cobain business, first Courtney Love declared there was a musical in the making, then it was denied and Frances Bean Cobain had a good laugh about it. Now there is a (confirmed) rumor about a documentary and Brett Morgen, director of the new Rolling Stones documentary, ‘Crossfire Hurricane’, is involved.
But is Courtney Love involved too? This is what Morgen said according to the New York Post: ‘Courtney is the one that brought me into this… We’ve been trying to find the right time to put this film together and the time is now […] We are going to do the movie sort of like a third-person autobiography — [as] if Kurt was around and making a film about his life.’
We? So she is in? However, nothing is simple with that woman and her rep has denied her role in the project, whereas she approves Morgen's choice, saying that he is ‘a great director’
Morgen confirmed it to Entertainment Weekly:
‘Back in 2007, I had a meeting in L.A. with Courtney Love to discuss my possible involvement in a Kurt Cobain documentary. She had seen my film, The Kid Stays in the Picture, and thought that I had the right vision and passion to bring Kurt’s story to life. Since that time, I have been speaking exclusively with Kurt Cobain’s estate, who have given me their full cooperation in order to make the film. Courtney isn’t currently involved with the project in any capacity. The estate and I will be releasing more information about our plans in the coming weeks. Production on the film will begin in the coming months and we are aiming for a 2014 release.’
I wonder how many Nirvana/Kurt Cobain documentaries have already been made already, there is the Gus Van Sant’s ‘Last Days’ , there is AJ Schnack’s ‘Kurt Cobain about a son’, then John Dower’s ‘Kurt Cobain: The Last 48 hours of’, and probably Courtney Love’s favorite one, ‘Kurt and Courtney’ by Nick Broomfield’s … Do we need another one? What will bring this new film? Will Morgen bring up the controversy surrounding his death again?
But there is even more, Kurt Cobain seems to have another moment right now, as the Gusman Center in Miami is about to host ‘KURT’ on December 6th, an event described as ‘a multi discipline exhibition and study of the late Kurt Cobain’ by Adarsha Benjamin, with a performance by Thurston Moore, an original dance choreographed by Ryan Heffington (who has worked with Muse and Beirut), inspired by the video of ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’, with an original music by Entrance Band's Guy Blakeslee, and a screening of ‘KURT’, yes, another film about Cobain, rather an 'abstract portrayal of the personality and many masks of the myth that surrounded the late Kurt Cobain' by Benjamin. I don’t know what people can expect for this one, probably a very artsy abstraction of the Cobain myth, but good news, Courtney Love doesn’t seem to be involved in this project either.
