I wouldn’t have bothered a full review at all but… when punk happened in 1976 it was God and the rest of pop was Sodom And Gomorrah and everything it wiped out is on this this album only much, much worse than you remember it.

Is it me or this sounds a bit cheesy-folksy, a bit campfire song, part old fashioned, part Jack Johnson tune mutated with powerhouse vocals? Not disagreeable but easily forgettable.

Modest Mouse’s song is a bright ballad with melancholic vocals tip toeing (just like this coyote) through gentle plucked guitars and full orchestration, brushed by harmonies soaring in cycles. The video couldn’t be more simple and this cute coyote seems so lost and adventurous at the same time,
It’s about how men see women as commodities, as though they don’t need them to complete them, they need something else, the Groupies, always dating upwards, staying on their grind, leave or live with it and finally, it is about that lonely piano note always there, always a plink, always sad, always waiting to be left alone
Let’s hope this is the first of a franchise, “Paddington” is a superb movie and I loved it. My grade is that of an old man, if you’re a seven year old child go ahead and give it an A+… you’ll be sharing it with your own kids one day!
Some ideas are so great, you can’t help but want to share them EVEN IF YOU KNOW EVERY SINGLE PERSON WHO WANTS TO SEE IT HAS ALREADY SEEN IT. That’s the case with Maroon 5’s fabulous “Sugar” video (I know, I’ve never written about videos before and now in two days…).
I mentioned Bruce and while I don’t know Matt’s story, this is blue collar songs by a guy who went to college, there is an intellectual intelligence about it, a sense of the tick tock intelligence of a thinker, and while Penny Park was the nostalgia album, Underwater also seems to be looking a little behind its back.
Rather playful and cool at the beginning, the song becomes a sort of freak-out ear-splitting noise pop tune, with outbursts of raw and loud screams in the chorus. The funny thing is that they synced their version to the original Sheryl Crow’s video so she seems to be doing this abrasive hyper-saturated yelling
Spoiled for choice this first week (but third week) of 2015. I’ve heard Sleater Kinney (A-), Belle And Sebastian (B) and Viet Cong (A-) and a handful of tracks off fall Out Boy (B) and three of Marilyn Manson wand while I am not COMPLETELY convinced of Manson, it could be Lupe, very close, but I am going with Marilyn as most anticipated of the week.
Apparently “Blank Space” isn’t just a great song, it is open to inerpretation. The last time I did this was with “Bridge Over troubled Water” though let’s be honest, there isn’t a name I recognize here. Where’s Johnny Cash when you need him. Now, shut up and drink your gin…
Hearing all these voices sing the hook hooked me, it taught me to hear it and as videos go it was a real blast. The song, about what we love in environments is not the environments offers a joke before a as a rebuke to David Byrne’s “Cities” -“it’s the loving we love” the band concludes.
Nobody’s Empire – Belle And Sebastian – This is what the band does, very very pretty indie pop, here with a memorable piano motif, and a smart shifting beat, with a wordy story about another failed romance (I think -I drifted off mid lyric) – A-
You Send Me – Swamp Dogg – Part jazz, part funk, mr. Dogg wails it into the bayou and twists his voice till it sounds like a sax and the whole thing sounds like he is being sent to the bottom of the river – B+

Peg – Donny Osmond – Completely credible cover with a stellar set of session men (especially whoever is playing lead guitar) behind him and Donny’s soulful take on the Steely Dan classic; Donny is having a whale of a time – A-

It sounds like synth pop with stronger melodies and more smarts than you might epect, the synth soars and a piano motif plays on another track, the entire thing is so lovely and the singer Leanne Macomber is etheral in a good one. It is from the album of the week – A

1989 is a full-fledged, biggest album of the year, huge artistic statement thing but it is also “The Empire Strikes Back” of rock. It is neither a beginning nor an ending, it is a breather from the romances that have been the essence of her life since “Tears On My Guitar”.
‘January’ is a melancholic piano ballad, the confessional type, with a great hook and a sweet voice at the top of this, a bit like her mother’s. The happy ‘Pluto’ is a glorious little tune performed with an acoustic guitar and Lulu’s strong childish vocals. She has quite a tuneful organ, and this one reminds me of some great classic
