So we have it, a collaboration between Paul McCartney and Yeezus, a gentle ballad with Kanye on the vocals and McCartney on the organ, but can I take this opportunity to say how much I hate auto-tuned vocals? I just don’t understand why Kanye uses them so much, it is so distracting and always remind me about the chipmunks. Anyway, the song is called ‘Only One’ and is very classy, it sounds nothing like Kanye’s last album and a press release says that Only One’ is ‘the first publicly available recording from what has become a prolific musical collaboration between these two legendary artists.’
And we get the first result with this new song, but another one should logically have a totally different vibe, because it is rumored to be entitled ‘Piss On Your Grave’!
The two have been recording last year ‘with McCartney improvising on keyboard and West improvising on vocals’, and ‘Kanye sat there with his family, holding his daughter North on his lap, and listened to his vocals, singing, ‘Hello, my only one…, And in that moment, not only could he not recall having sung those words, but he realized that perhaps the words had never really come from him. The process of artistic creation is one that does not involve thinking, but often channeling. And he understood in that moment that his late mother, Dr. Donda West, who was also his mentor, confidante, and best friend, had spoken through him that day.’
It is probably a bit too much for me, and if you believe this, this is your problem, but Kanye is good at using the sentimental vibe, the dead mother’s spirit and the baby on his knees… it seems so calculated to me, whereas the song actually sounds like some old Stevie Wonders,…. but just drop the auto-tuned vocals for North’s sake!
