I loved how there were more musicians than just the three in the band- they had horns and more guitars and everything that they needed; it was a show, and the added elements made the music part of it sound just like how it does on the albums.

Six of these songs are from Saturday/Sunday morning’s DFA’s anniversary gig and all are excellent and all are better live but especially “Dystopia” which I kinda wish I had taped so I could hear it instead of the original. Though the proceedings were being taped so maybe DFA will beat me to it.
DFA at Grand Prospect Hall had the potential to be one of the great concerts of all time. A losing my edge “I was there when…” moment in New York musical history, but it didn’t come close because greed or stupidity or just poor judgement made any attempts to fulfill the evenings potential thwarted

I know Jack Phillips pretty well and so have been privy to the arrangements leading up to his performance Tuesday night at Don’t Tell Mamas, and it has been exhaustive. But this is a major concert and Phillips will have a band accompany his performance of songs off Cafe Nights In New York as well as songs from the American Standards songbook.
