Ramshackle Glory's Bassist Being Held Without Bail For Protesting G20 Summit

Free Dane Rossman

If you’ve heard Ramshackle Glory’s 2012 album Live The Dream, as I just did at Mary Magpie’s suggestion, you will, as I and Mary did, become immediate fans. The Texas punk anarchist who admit on the country banjo self portrait “From Here To Utopia – Song For The Desperate” “the way I live is a temper tantrum” and then act it out, write really great songs, sort of Billy Bragg meets the early Clash if the Clash were born and raised in Texas.

And that should be enough right? What else do you need to know? How about this: bassist Dane Rossman has been in jail since February awaiting extradition to Canada for protesting the G20 summit in 2010. Dane can’t go home, can’t get bail, can’t leave jail. Nothing. As Dylan put it about someone else: he sits like Buddah in a six foot cell.

This is pretty obvious to me. The G20 is the financial and economic 20 nations who are keeping most of the world in deep poverty while the usual criminals and politicians line their pockets. Look: I am not a political beast but I know this, Banks gave cheap loans with ballooning premiums to people who couldn’t afford them. Then they sold the toxic loans to other banks in a pyramid scheme that makes Bernie Madoff look like Billy The Kid and when the bottom fell out, you and I bailed out the banks and the only people who lost out were those who lost their job and their house to maintain the status quo.

And that’s off the top of my head.

It is outrageous to jail and leave in jail Dane Rossman for three months and counting. Isn’t this what was done to Randy Blythe, right? It couldn’t happen here right.

I don’t know the is and outs of this case but Mary and Helen have promised to get more deeply involved. I do know the stench of bullshit, of jailing political dissidents makes me gag.

It was Dane’s 26th birthday May 19th, this has to top. How can you condemn Russia for Pussy Riot and Czech Republic for Randy and ignore Dane?
