Music, religion, grieving, more music, transcendence, hope, memory, faith, soul . Some people need to mourn in private, Aretha had said. Some people ned to mourn with people. She needed to mourn with people.

Must See? D'Angelo In August Is The Concert Of The Summer

By Iman Lababedi | June 14, 2013

When you see d’Angelo around other pop singers, like at the Carnegie Hall gig, it is a little upsetting. He is so much better than everybody it is like a glimpse of greatness behind a firewall of mediocrity

Jahn Xavier And The Bowerytones: New Album On The Way

By Iman Lababedi | January 24, 2013

“There are 12 more. Most of the rockers are not yet mixed, as we added new guitars this past week.”. So it feels like a couple of months and if you have yet to listen to his band the Bowerytones get ready to remember just how great blue eyed soul can be in the hands of a great rock band,

Al Green At The Beacon Theater, Wednesday, August 22nd, 2012

By Iman Lababedi | August 24, 2012

It is as if he was translating his thoughts into music, skipping through soul music and switching, changing, impressing and deprecating in a moment, in a second. When he lost the thread the band sounded like somebody that had lost its train of thought, and when he felt the moment, sometimes only for a couple of words while the band vamped all the scattered threads were tied together.

Frank Ocean At Terminal 5, Thursday, July 26th, 2012

By Iman Lababedi | July 28, 2012

Vocally, Frank is great, his range is really wide and his top end glorious, the songs are either great or not great and too much of it drags, but on stage that is much less a problem. The introspect eccentric rock star image is friendlier on stage, and he gave a good performance

Helen Bach watched Rev. Green preach once in Memphis. here is her review: “My friend chipped her tooth”. Yup, that’s all she’s got.

D'Angelo Back In 2012

By Iman Lababedi | December 8, 2011

The purveyor of precisely two albums, each a masterpiece, his performance at Radio City Music Hall -a three hour act of stamina and bravado, is the one to beat. And other than a featured slot on a Q-tip strack and an arrest for soliciting a prostitute, we haven’t heard much.

Aretha at the same venue in September 2009 and have every intention of going again; that concert, with the spirit of Curtis Mayfield so close by, has reached mythic stature
