When you see d’Angelo around other pop singers, like at the Carnegie Hall gig, it is a little upsetting. He is so much better than everybody it is like a glimpse of greatness behind a firewall of mediocrity

It is as if he was translating his thoughts into music, skipping through soul music and switching, changing, impressing and deprecating in a moment, in a second. When he lost the thread the band sounded like somebody that had lost its train of thought, and when he felt the moment, sometimes only for a couple of words while the band vamped all the scattered threads were tied together.
Vocally, Frank is great, his range is really wide and his top end glorious, the songs are either great or not great and too much of it drags, but on stage that is much less a problem. The introspect eccentric rock star image is friendlier on stage, and he gave a good performance
