.Side Effects Of You – Fantasia – She has gone through a lot to get here, a nigh on perfect soul record, mixing dance and ballads to equal effect and sounding very much like the woman who has survived the life she has, indeed survived.
Get Lucky – Daft Punk – There isn’t enough words for the greatnest of Niles Rodgers guitar on this song. It is a great slice of disco any way, but that guitar man, Daft Punk ride the lick all the way to the finish line
The Dark Magus track comes to mind because I was discussing best live albums. It is great because of Favis, but it is one of the best with the addition of two electric guitars. Meanwhile… Laura Stevenson makes a mockery of Pitchfork’s tepid review, and Big Sean has a lot to live up to and on this first song off the newbie he manages.
Jones imparted gravitas to everything he sang. Knowing sin and salvation, he could effortlessly convey anguish, hope, and humor. He stuck to his knitting
Unfortunately the ‘Dont You Want Me Baby” singers The Human League want ‘math’ more than audience. They have pulled out of the tour and now the stage needs a replacement. Already on board are Howard Jones and Andy Bell of Erasure. Yeah, I cant see that filling my lawn let alone a venue of any size.

Daughter’s eagerly anticipated debut album is upon us and I am very excited over a new Hanni El Khattib but unless you are in the market for LL Cool J, not much else going on here. Did I ever mention that I take this list off Metacritic? Seven years ago I tried to put together a website that collated reviews of new albums from everywhere and was half way thru the process when somebody mentioned Metacritic. rock nyc is the grandchild of that idea.
Did you read Steve Crawford’s excellent “The Essential Songs Of George Jones”? “The Old Rugged Cross” is the song he choose off my fave Jones album. # 1 is from a phenomenal album Tomas Doncker turned me on to, part of Red+ Hot charity albums, this one is from Red+ Hot + Riot. A superb, like mind bending album I may actually review though it is years old.
As for the video, it’s pretty cute. The guys pretty much do what every teenager does behind closed doors- mouth the words to awesome songs and dance around. It’s pretty great because it kind of shows us their silly side, and watching them have fun is entertaining. Not to mention how cool the concert footage is
Personal best was the great “Blocka” with all the reggae influences gone and song emerging as a singalong, but a scary one. Pusha T holds the stage very well, maybe better than Fab later in the evening, he is all attitude and intimidation.
The music was going in many directions too, with layered hazy synths and keyboards, some stamping dance beats, a funky bass, an exotic vibe coming from some guitar solos, and Halliday’s soaring voice, the ensemble producing some infectious and catchy songs like ‘The Game is Changing us’ or ‘Lonesome Body’.

Honestly, these HOTT MT kids were plain weird, trying to be too weird or having a genuine taste for weirdness?
The low light of the week is Iggy and The Stooges on Colbert. Steve Colbert is going to eat him alive. We all saw how he interacted with Morrissey so his chat with Iggy should be epic. Oh, and I have lost all respect for Mr Pop since his god awful cameo in the John Varvatos edition of luxury car commercial. How un-punk rock.
Sure, the album was the definition of a disappointment and sure, yet again, Morrissey wipes Marrs clock BUT he is one of the greatest guitarists of his generation and he was born to do it live on stage so stop whining and check him out at Music Hall Of Williamsburg on a Friday no less.
OK, so They’ve been on the charts long enough I figured I’d give Bastille another shot People get things wrong, you know. But this album is completely horrible and I overestimate it with a “C+”.
Daft Punk’s single would be good any way but Niles Rodgers guitar lick is so good it overwhelms everything else it is perfect. Britain’s Got Talent runners up sound like Olly Murs only less so.
Both Dylan and the Band roar through this version off Before The Flood, he snarls, it spits, it feels political (Nixon is the mark). The entire album is not punk but gangsta rap in its lack of subtlety. He never stops. It never stops. I am thinking of writing some more about George Jones, I have written about him many times through the years, but every time I saw it feels as though I am rattling off cliches.
There’s a cool caginess about Fabolous, he doesn’t let you see him sweat and his performance has an edge of implied arrogance just because the effort seems so minimal. His connection to the band and to the audience is devoid of anything approaching a big gesture
Am I too old to be first row at a Wavves’ gig? Probably, but I just wanted to take a few pictures, however they turned out all fuzzy and blurry with all that pushing-jumping-bouncing-surfing energy emerging from the crowd.

Side Effects Of You – Fantasia – In the battle for American Idol diva supremacy, Fantasia always played suicidal kid sister to Jennifer Hudson’s late flowering superstar. But this is a terrific album, with three sure shots and handfuls of groove filled post-disco movers. Fantasia wins. ALBUM OF THE WEEK – Grade: A-
This is Fantasia’s week, here excellent new album has dominated my work all week. But as far as singles go, Talib’s single is closer to Motown than anything featured play Miguel has managed before. Makes em both worth taking seriously immediately, even the rap is excellent.
Half of these tracks were listened to in celebration of George Jones life, the other half a mix of Pusha T and Fabolous in celebration of the BB King gig. Fabolous’ “Into You” I had forgotten about but it sure sounds great a decade later. Jones I am getting a little obscure on but “The Gospel Collection” is awesome. He really wasn’t much of an album artist, was he?
From Macbeth to Haile Selasie, Kings abound, from King Kong to Caligula to Faust, monsters are around and from Al Bowly , Optical, Howling Wolf, Alicia Bridges and Tomas Doncker there is music in the cafes at night and revolution in the theatrics of Randy Weiner and Alfred Preisser
Maceo and the band referenced signature vocal hooks from these classic jams throughout an original composition to give the feeling of a story being told. The start of a never ending journey.
Did I mention the small club was totally packed? The trio kept it simple and basic, with just guitars and drums (but also a large collection of pedals) they produced a thunderously loud sound that made the crowd react at the first song
Paul Williams today rushed out on stage and really meant it when he sang to the audience that he “wouldn’t last a day without you.” He’s grateful to be alive and it appears he’s happier than he’s ever been
Every single tune on this album is special and fun and holds a special place in my heart- there’s not one song I ever skip. The rarity of that is something I don’t think I’ll ever find again any time soon. They’re just such a talented band and everything they do, I fall in love with.
So what a great year to pluck out some concert footage- digitally remaster it, and put it up on the big screen? Now you can walk in to your local theater and pretend you’re there all over again. Remember that movie theaters have phenomenal sound systems these days and with the massive screen and tilt back chairs- why its a luxury show
I persuaded Bowie, somehow, to give me a sort of a work flow diagram for The Next Day, because I wanted to think about it in light of what he was thinking about it, I wanted to understand the lexicon of The Next Day, and so I simply asked if he would provide this list of words about his album
with their reunion album at the top of the charts and billets to their performance too hot to handle, the emo rockers have returned from bad marriages and good diets to take their place as the rock and roll band to beat. Save Rock and Roll is (debatably) their best album but that isn’t enough at all, they have given all the earnings from their Boston gig to benefit the victims of their marathon. yep, everything is coming up FOB
Tom should sing Dylan more often, #4 – # 5 were all recommended by Mary Magpie and Flatsound is a major find, and as for Pusha T… he is no good at intimacy. And a whole lotta George jones.
Everybody from Elvis C. to Emo rock owes their vocabulary of pain to the great man and nobody around today or yesterday for that matter can compare. Even Ray Charles loved him.

The opening Morrissey voice over (and the closing) are cute and hopefully piss Morrissey off so he goes on a little rant and the lyric about the fain flattening his hair. That’s about it. This is a parody song for Morrissey fans but its just not funny enough to stick. Using song snips is well and good but they’re somewhat random. I wanted to love this- I couldn’t
The song is a memory trip with a specific focus on three young women from each rapper’s past. The song’s saving grace is that, where it could have delved further into the cesspool that is mainstream rap, it pulls back and instead allows for lyrics with more poignancy and meaning

I think the move to keyboards killed him, just killed him. If you listen to his 1990s live boots, like the awesome “Sensei” and go to his shows today, the difference is bizarre indeed. W’appen?
The Brooklyn band is going to perform the same song ‘Sorrow’ off their album ‘High Violet’, for 6 straight hours at MOMA’s PS1 on May 5th.
