No, I don’t think I could handle that, I think that would be unkind and unfair to him too. He needs to be where he is, y’ know — I’m sure he’s occupied.
How – Regina Spektor – Her best song since “Ink Stain” is similar in a sense: the desperate anti-Semitism of the latter is mirror’d in the desperate heartbreak of “How”, And both chill on the idiosyncrasies.
49 teenage girls have been injured at a Justin Bieber concert in Oslo, Norway. The pop superstar was giving a free concert of just four songs outside the Oslo Opera House last Wednesday, and thousands of fans had gathered
No Surprises – Radiohead – OK Computer was the album that turned me off Radiohead, that and a coupla crappy concerts. This song has a simple poetic that turns the sound and fury of life sideways and onto its stomach – Grade: A
Each release is better than the next and their live shows are so ridiculously fun that you never want to go. The banter coupled with the simplistic beats and up beat tunes are intoxicating and energizing. Yet they’re still in tiny clubs playing the same limping band of scene kids
she could have been either a wild female chimpanzee escaped from her cage, or a girl being electrocuted, I am not sure, but soon it was over. People clapped at the end of her horror movie, which, I have read, is influenced by Artaud’s Theater of Cruelty
rock nyc has been covering Sheeran for awhile now and while his first albm + is still not released here, it is dropping in June. And it has reached the attention of one of our greatest songwriters, Taylor Swift.
Beck’s son, 8 year-old Cosimo, joined his father on stage at the Santa Barbara Bowl last week, and started the boldest moves during E-Pro. You can hear the crowd in awe screaming and cheering in front of the mini Beck jumping around and even trying some break dance pirouettes.
Dan Aquilante quit to start his own syndicated column called (I kid you not) Dan the Man, on dantheman.com. It isn’t the worst idea in the world.
As similar as the tones of Fredddie Mercury and Nate Ruess may be, that’s where the comparison should end. Ruess a more theater based vocal to Freddies rock and roll yell.
think mean B.B. King, mad muddy Mississippi rock-blues, trucker music for the open-fields or infinitely straight roads of the west, and you may get the idea
TT would be cool opening for Motorhead as Ceremony (or Odd Future themselve come to that). there is something a little ali in their attack, but it comes thru in the end, and after 7 years doing this, they know the sweet button: Trask Talk don’t care, and they don’t care if you know it.
Regina Spektor at United Palace, played 50% new material in a cavernous room and still killed even in the cheap seats on May 21st, 2012.
“The cycles of taking two years off don’t exist anymore. We were able to do that because we had record royalties coming in consistently. ‘Now you put out an album, and you have a windfall maybe once or twice but not the way it used to be – a check every three months.”
Think you’ve seen this chart before? You habe, except for the American Idol at # 10, who sold 300K digital copies by the way, it is exactly the same as last week. Translation: hip hop ain’t charting the way it used to.
That Mayer? Not a fluke, it sold 300K units and considering he is not touring and hasn’t done that much press, the word got out. Also, I think I underestimated it myself. In the battle of the boy bands, One Direction are playing NSynch to The Wanter’s Back Street Boys.
There is a future Spektor, and it isn’t that far away, where all her gypsy affectations are completely absored and her songs stand alone. Such as this devastating look at anti-Semitism which seems to rattle the doors of hatred even as it jumps right in. Grade: A+
Blacc had so much charm and charisma, it was difficult to not like him, he was communicating constantly with his audience, was constantly moving with the same grace and ease, and was taking the pause, arms spread apart, athletic body slightly bent.
Rafters, is a minor beauty filled with imminently lovely stuff built for co-eds with a crush, and they perform them with an intense thereness almost hippieish in its pained good nature. Towards the end everything comes together “To Be Young” which, if the vocal arrangement wasn’t the wonder of the title track, moves lightly to a singer songwriterly denounement.
His catalog of music both live and studio is staggering. Some of it sounds soft today but the music must viewed of its time because in its time it was revolutionary so much so that now it has been imitated ad infinitum.
If you’re stoked about this upcoming ditty you can pop on over to Rolling Stone and stream it for free now. Get your twang on so to speak. What a perfect pairing, the witty vomit of Rolling Stone and the whining ignorance of Neil Young- a win win for all!
They seemed to mix the bright and the dark in the middle of the day at the Silverlake Jubilee, and since these two opposites don’t usually seem to go together, it was a little weird and interesting at the same time.
When Will first reaches 1969 “2000 Light Years From Home” is playing. “Pictures Of Matchstick Men” figures prominently at a party Andy Warhol holds at the Factory. Lots of country and western whenever K is driving around whether it is 1969 or 2012. And Pitbull!!!
Jayne county is headlining a Max’s Kansas City alumni night on Bowery Electric on Thursday June 6th, a five band extravaganza for $20. And the cherry on top, a better headliner than the entire overdone CBGB’s festival, is the terrific woman and her band the Electric Chairs.
Anyway, shes tired. After all that fame and dazzle Ms Del Rey is going Lady Gaga and cancelling gigs due to exhaustion. Considering her stoic demeanor I wonder, what’s tired?
Sony super exec Doug Morris, who left UMUS earlier this year, is poised to steal the crown for most sales. Sony has gone from a 26% share to a 29% share and currently less than 2% separate the two behemoths
Their songs were nevertheless going from a straightforward foot-tapping pop-folk evoking bands of the past, whereas others had a more modern feeling, a little too complex to be qualified of ‘commercial’, but still exuberant and catchy.
How the hell can the dude for Avatar be Joey and what gives him the gaul to accept that challenge? I guess it can be considered historic value but really I don’t expect much but a shot at profit. I predict it to tank harder than Water World
David and his wife were forced to flee their Sussex UK mansion due to a bomb scare. The Gilmours were having some work done to the six floor humble abode when the builders stumbled across a pipe shaped device.
I can’t wait to catch her in an Arena. I wonder if this is the first shot across the brow before a full scale tour? And I wonder what she will do with the kid? Now Jigga has retired maybe he will househusband… awww, who is kidding who?
Pretty good rap, nice rasp at the end of her voice (not unlike Nicki), African tom toms in the bank and smooth jazz sample. The next big thing ain’t all bad – Grade: B+
I really love Joey’s voice and while the music added after the fact is all well and good, and the songs are obviously drafts and not really for released, still I am happy to hear that punk height voice of his again
Their delicate indie pop was alternating between repetitive and monotonous swirling synths, borderline experimental at time, waken up by electric guitars, but overall their music was the type difficult-to-catch-at-the-first-listening. They played songs form their latest release, and said they would play a song from ‘their old record that bombed’,… was that ‘Cocoon of Love’?
Because some of the greatest music around you will never hear because of the market place, distribution or one’s own arrogance, narcissism, and or stupidity. It a world were most people are working so hard to out cool everyone else they miss the coolest things.
The band was impressive despite the young age of its members, it was good vibes all over the place, with a light touch of surf guitar on certain songs, a constant dynamism over their light upbeat pop, and sometimes a little more darkness hardly perceptible behind all this poppiness.
Frankly, I feel that this once powerful duo has sold out to today’s mainstream top 40 music. When I listened to them in 2008 as a little scene kid, their music had much more depth than this new single.
Jennifer Chiba says “she heard a terrible noise coming from the kitchen.” In the police report, she said that it was a scream she heard. On other accounts, she called it a “thud.”
when the Magpie asked a friend of hers to join us she got a strange texted reply..
‘well no offense and all and I think your mom is really cool, but my parents think shes sorta weird for taking you to all those shows..”
This music reminds me of the underground heavy metal scene that spawned Metallica in the 1980s. There is a similar mutation on a mainstream sound being taken somewhere else entirely and of a secret handshake of sound. The difference is it is hard to imagine it going mainstream.
Their joyous energy was an important part of their performance, and their rowdy-moody pop-rock music was exploding all over the place on the sunset stage of the Jubilee at the end of this beautiful sunny afternoon.
You dont get the whole funeral shebang though, just the real estate. Kinda cool to be in the same concrete box that the King used before being moved to his Graceland Estate.
To gain a better understanding of Mercury’s early life and his somewhat fraught relationship with his traditional, conservative past Jones traveled to Zanzibar, his birthplace, and India, where he attended boarding school. Jones also provides new insights into the great loves of Mercury’s life-
The final temptation of Robin was to wonder where he stood in the middle of all this: some folks appear to have everything but have some form of bad luck about the, How can the man who co-wrote “To Love Somebody” be considered a sad figure in rock? The song was written to order for Robert Stigwood, the band were too commercially calculated.
Not a bad week at all. Scissor Sister is very good and may get better, Regina may be the album of the year, the Azelia Banks is eagerly awaited. The Reunion EP is remixes but ths is cool, one is byu Dale Earnhardt Jr Jr
Possible the song of the year is a straightforward break up ballad, no quirk, no wainking, no implicit irony: just a pure, stunning love song. It’s not that she is growing up but rather that she is becooming less guarded… purer – Grade: A
Most of their slick songs had hypnotic repetitive loops with a light touch of Dick-Dale-ish surf riffs, and were installing a druggy-psychedelic ambiance,…. But over everything, all this had a catchiness you couldn’t miss
He plays old tunes with respect but he draws more from the original. In his hands the old becomes new again. Suddenly a song you heard a few times and have forgotten comes back to you as new and more amazing than the last time you heard
We had to react to either a heartfelt love song, or a vulgar sex ballad. It was a song of our choice, to reflect our musical tastes. Upon first hearing of the assignment, I went straight to “I Want To Know Your Plans” by Say Anything. I felt as though it was too obviously a love song, so I went with something a bit more thought provoking and realistic- Bright Eyes’ “Lua”.
Their songs have this curious and surprising construction, as they are animated by sudden catchy outbursts separated by quiet moments isolating Sean Solomon’s youthful and whining vocals. With them, the violin became the most punk instrument
