Best Coast's "Storms" Reviewed
“Storms” is a four and a half minute long goodbye, apparently aimed at Nathan Williams, which finds the singer tackling loneliness and the end of the relationship with as much grace as she can manage.

When I was a young freelancer for the Village Voice’s music pages in the early 1980s, Alexander Cockburn wrote the brutal, hysterical Press Clips column with James Ridgeway, putting light on the liars
No real idea how to sell what there is. How to package and repackage, they way they did Presley, or the way Dylan has done to himself. The back catalog is stagnant. And the estate still grossed $475M.
This after the Bat-shooting in Colorado. Tasteless? Yeah, but this is the same broad who got off on an alter so its not as if being vile was uncharted territory for her. As for the Bat-death, well there we have another issue. Was it insensitive?
Last time the Who played Quadrophenia in New York I went three times. Of course you could take the price of all three times, add em together and multiply by 5 and it wouldn’t reach the price of their Incredible Top Reserve Seat!
This is, in effect, the follow up to “Runaway”, and it is terrible. From sentiment to sound, this is one of the hip hop songs West has ever put his name to. Generic beats, iffy sample. you’ve heard it before you’ve listened to it spund. Good Music doing smart ass business as usual. And as for refrain? “Come and have a good time with G.O.D.” . Plus a shout out to Whitney Houston, which, maybe, they should have thought better of. Good music? Yeah, right. Grade: C-
I was in complete unknown territory, in weirdland… but as I was looking at the people around me, I realized the crowd was as diverse as it could possibly be, made of a guy in full punk attire, a trance-dance woman deeply into the music – who had warned me she wanted to save her dance space
The best cover song ever recorded (Hendrix on Dylan), Glen Campbell continued to deftly deliver Jimmy Webb material, and the Byrds transition from jangle pop to a country band. Sam Moore and Dave Prater hated each other with such gusto that they refused to speak to each other for 13 years during their working relationship, but they could still create magic in the studio for 2 and a half minute intervals.
I wasn’t the only famous person who went in this shop… Frank Zappa, Robert Plant,Joni Mitchell, Debbie Harry….yeah..and “Whats his name, from The Clash”…
They say they will reopen in a new location……but it wont be the same. Sad times..
“Music artists, have lost 83 percent of their catalog revenues with the digital revolution (a client who used to make $400,000 annually from music sales is now pocketing $68,000, he said). To compare: The four-year recession has diminished the average American’s net worth by half that at 40 percent.”
By reproducing the nightclub ambiance, they definitively attract their target crowd, young people who are going to stay longer inside because of the loud music and so buy more of their stuff, while older people feel annoyed by the high decibels and leave faster.
“People are just afraid of things too much … Sure, evil exists, extremism exists. Somebody could commit a hate crime and hurt me. But they could do the same just because I’m black. They could do the same just because I’m American.”
Give the minor acts from ten to fifteen minutes, and half an hour for the leads. There is nothing that says the Killers has to bore us for two hours. Let them make their point and get off the fucking stage
After too many shouts of ‘wake and bake’ and actually laughing as if he invented the phrase the weed weighed so heavy in the air that I thought I saw the image of Bob Marley floating above. See you have to be high to appreciate T. Mills
Nobody has the flow Biggie had, nobody has Biggie’s voice (Rick Ross? Don’t make me laugh), nobody could tell a story, use humor, on his very next (and final) album, he would reinvent the sample, and by the suicide that ends this album, Biggie put a stake in the heart of rap and rebuilt it in his own image. Nobody else has come close. Particularly the humor.
Their music has been qualified of ‘chilly’ and I would say it is a good idea of their sound, which focused on surreal and astral synth swirls, wrapping their songs just below the floating female vocals. The drumming was minimal and often limited to cymbal use
“This thing is the equivalent to a county fair, aimed at aging, overweight dudes who can’t get over the fact it’s been 15 years since they were involved in a “good stompin’ in tha pit!”
I was excited. I had a huge love for The Killers an found their lyrics to paint lovely pictures. But the high pitched warble vocals are more annoying then contagious. Is this the end of the band? Is this a swan song LP?
oldja this was the summer of blah. Really, Gaslight Anthem is the beacon of hope for rock and roll? Why??? Bruce at his worse (well, near his worse) takes em down coming. JLo is down to a greatest hits. And Passion Pit were never a fave and are taking a leave of absence.
Fine Knacks For Ladies – The King’s Singer – Elizabethan pop, al soprano lead vocalist and background bassist and a lone lute to tell a story not unfamiliar to the Beatles fans: money can’t buy me love – Grade: A
I adore this kid and from the first time he (literally) fell off his tour bus in Boston and threw his arms around me like I was his long lost mother at the Breathe Carolina show, I have had a soft spot for the little white rapper who oozes positivity like a pierced jello mold
The Neighbourhood (yes with a u) had these hook-the-crowd melodies infused with indie pop and R&B, a little dreamy, a little nostalgic and well served by the soulful voice of their frontman Jesse James Rutherford, whose body seemed to be covered by tattoos.
teppenwolf introduced the phrase “heavy metal” to music listeners, Sly and the Family Stone became one of the first popular racially integrated bands, and Jimi Hendrix was teaching electric guitars to play sonic assaults that they did not know were possible. The Beatles released a decent album that year, as well.
Forget it. Fucking forget it. You’re 0 for 1 Illonois. – Chicago tomorrow.
So I’m not the only voice that gets heard, – Jon describe tonight in three words –
“Let’s fucking go.”
The truth is, mortality is not the same as irrelevance, and people have souls even if they are not immortal. Science can’t tell us why can we stir cream into coffee but we can’t stir it out, it sure can’t tell us why a six year old girl is dead in Colorado.
This was a picture perfect New England summer festival. Already looking forward to the next Warped Tour! Stay with us and over the next few days we will have reviews of Mod Sun, Lost Prophets, I Fight Dragons, (and their interview!!) as well as tons of pit pictures from the Magpie who covered the other side of the stages.
We will always be divided around stories like these ones. Most fans find a way to totally separate the artist from the music, other ones have some difficulties, but if you are not a fan in the first place, it becomes almost impossible to accept such a behavior from an artist
Say what you want about Billy Corgan, and to be honest he has mismanged his career to an amazing career, from firing his band and failing to replace them to making some of the lousiest music known to man… hang on, I forgot where I was going there…. Oh yeah, Billy has done it his way. And really has been there and back
Lily was seen in the recording studio lately and is returning to record a song with Pink! Needless to say, Lily is giving Pink the favor in this. At her best, Pink isn’t in the same realm as Lily: Lily is an astute songwriter and observer of women and the social scene.
Tyler and Sweatshirt, the two best rappers off the best posse in town, together at Best Buy. I’m betting it will be less Odd Fture chaos, more dark rhythms. And I wonder if Frank Ocean is gonna show on Thursday night.
Misha B is the one that broke the top ten rule because 1) i love the song and 2) she is from hometown and 3) I didn’t realize when I put up the pix! PS: she was a semi-finalist on “The X Factor” -that means something in the UK
I can’t express my admiration of the electronic duo Pnau’s remixes of songs released by Elton John , 1970 – 1976, highly enough. Don’t worry that you don’t know the track names, “Foreign Fields” samples from “High Flying Bird” for instance, and so it isn’t obvious at first. Whatever, it deserves the # 1 position
No Endz, No Skinz – Big L – From 1600 minstrels, to 1990s gang bangas, they have one thing in common: you ain’t got money, no super-honey. The video is a hoot, cinema veritie with the great rapper and his crew on the streets of Manhattan in pursuit of girls with big booties, and the song is so alive it brims over with fun and smarts. Shoulda broken pop. Grade: A
three voices doing harmonies over harmonies, Este on bass, Danielle on guitar and Alana on guitar and synth played a strong set of their original compositions inspired from 90s R&B, 80s funky synth music and classic rock and folk.
It makes me think, if there is a concert and I don’t go does it really exist. Or perhaps the other way around. What will happen when I die? Will there be no more rock shows?
Its hard for Americans to fathom, I mean we bitch over the smallest infraction but when all is said and done and least we know where we stand with the law. In other countries its at the whim of a choice few and the ‘we dont like your kind’ mentality can run amuck.
All right, we got it, we have heard about Wavves-Best-Coast’s culture of the endless summer, as this song doesn’t seem to end… but I was expecting much more from the King of the Beach! With this overplayed loop all over it, the song may have some surf-fuzzy and of course summery thing going on, but it mostly sounds like one unique and distorted sample of an obscure 60s hit
My first time at Warped I think I wore jeans and a t-shirt brought $20. a lipstick and my license. What? A 10 hour concert in direct sunlight… figure that out. By hour 3 I was sweating like a pig, filthy, starving and sunburned.
Flea released the following statement:
‘Hi people who like The Red Hot Chili Peppers! I love you a lot! Mucho! Just wanted to give you a heads up about this little record ’Helen Burns’ I am putting out on the Silverlake Conservatory website,”
Spotify has enhanced its service but entering the Android market and adding a free radio stream, that alone is worth the nod. Pandora and I heart Radio are weak and predictable, Spotify offers so much more and that on top of the incredibly endless supply of new old and obscure tunes. I am completely addicted to Spotify radioPandora and I heart Radio are weak and predictable, Spotify offers so much more and that on top of the incredibly endless supply of new old and obscure tunes. As Wagnerian dramas go, it is an oedipuzt rex out for mama’s love and not getting it. It seems a little silly to at this point… ah, what the hell, Wayne’s very wealthy parents are shot to death by robbers (in front of him) when Wayne is only a little bats.
Rebirth – Jimmy Cliff – Oldies re-recorded plus a Clash and Rancid cover, Reggae giant Jimmy “The Harder They Fall” Cliff, who has been trying to straighten out his career. Cliff has a pop side to him but we sure ain’t getting that, except for “Reggae Music” this is the hard stuff so react accordingly – Grade: B+
5 Fingers Of Death (feat D.I.T.C.) – Big L – Somewhere between horrorcore and gangsta, Big L was one of the greatest rappers of raps greatest generations. The sample sounds like it came off a Bernard Hermann score and Big L As good as anything on Lifestylez Ov Da Poor And Dangerous -Grade: A
The sound is fantastic a ska-like dance tune with Gwen offering up her own ‘hollah’ backing vocals. Way cool. No Doubt hasn’t aged- no doubt hasn’t changed a bit. They sound exactly the same and without any tweak or experimentation. The band is just back-right where they left off.
He put energy behind every word which is not something you can say for many rappers. Even if when you couldn’t quite hear him because of the sheer volume of the music and crowd, Big Boi just kept up the energy and got louder so you could hear his sharp lyrics
Billboard magazine is reporting that Beck will be contributing three new songs, ‘Cities’, ‘Touch the People’, and ‘Spiral Staircase’ to the video game ‘Sound Shapes’. The game will be out on August 7 on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita
Recorded too late for inclusion on the ‘Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars’, it was considered for the following year’s ‘Aladdin Sane’, but never made it on to the final running order. It’s hard to imagine but in researching this oddity it appears to be true.
Stubhub don’t want to know how the ticket sellers got their tickets any more than Ticketmaster want to know who is buying the tickets. Everything else is halls and mirrors.
By watching these two videos of the songs ‘New Noise’ and ‘The Shape of Punk To Come’, you can tell they brought lots of rage and high energy quite unusual on late night TV
. He needs Liam to sing his classics because, like I said, he can’t really do it himself. I saw Noel perform a solo acoustic gig at the Beastie Boys Tibetan charity gig at Randall’s Island and he sucked at it.
