Let’s say you have a band you really believe in, what’s to stop you investing a million bucks and a team of assistants and buying up 40,000 or 100,000 units and letting the fans decide whether the band is good with all the additional publicity a hit album will get you. I don’t think it is even illegl.
Whoever agreed to this deal should be fired, and if Live Nation continue to throw money away, the next thing they’ll be signing is lawyers documents as they go Chapter 11

The solution is simple: tell ticketmaster they have six months to develop the software to stop this or their license to sell tickets will be revoked.
Anyway, as expected, some kid found the golden ticket and put it on sale on eBay, and the highest bid for one of these things was $4,100.00 when I looked at it on Monday!

Why would the woman who wrote “Ink Stains” sully who reputaion with questionable business practises? To appear to have sold an extra 100K units and enter the charts and #4 instead of #14?
Since chart tampering is ridiculously easy, perhaps Billboard needs to update the rules. For instance, disallow bundling unless there is an option to buy or not the new album with the ticket to a show. Also, perhaps sales needs to be moved from units sold to dollars generated.

Well, do the math: it costs just about nothing to get the music, and a c note for a tix to the concert. And concert tix are not fueled by sales all the time. U2, and Bon Jovi for the two most obvious examples haven’t charted strong in years.
17,000 units moved may be many things, but it isn’t really a hit album. I mean, I would be shocked if the record company made a profit on it. 17,000 units and an on the border top 10 album? If that’s the case, while Billboard are doing many fine things, I don’t think they are telling us the bottom line on succesful bands any more.
Nomenclature is really important when you write about music,if you are clever enough you can even come up with new ones, but there are already so many of them….the Guardian had the list of all the different origins:
look at Itunes as the equivalent of a retail outlet like Tower Records used to be. Go in to Tower on a Tuesday morning and there are single bins filled with new releases put their by distributors who paid Tower for product placement. And then against the wall they would place alphabetically every new release in stock.
