It’s definitely a new sound, and has a more well-rounded feel than “Phoenix” and “Light Em Up”. I take back what I said about “Phoenix”- because this will be THE song of summer 2013. It has a hint of pop pizazz but is most certainly “indie” enough for the other fans. It just makes you feel happy, which is really nice

I remember seeing Aaron Embry at a 2002 Elliott Smith gig at the Echo, he played a few songs with him, but he even toured with him and recorded the song ‘Pretty (Ugly Before)’. Later in his career, he performed with Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, but he played and recorded with many artists, like Daniel Lanois, Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris. I guess bands are sometimes so focused at making the perfect video with a captivating story, that the song takes the second plan,… but isn’t the purpose of a video to promote the song and not vice-versa?
The surprise of the week is Alkaline, I was so impressed I stubhubbed a tix to their best Buy gig next month, the two here are the best on a real good album. The Chris Brown sticks out as another real good post-MJ dance track. nd the Virgins track? It happens sometimes that I get an album completely wrong and I feel as though I seriously underestimated the new Virgins.
The horn-driven tune sounds like a classic big band rock anthem, a little bit like the soundtrack of a big budget epic movie before the real action starts. It’s not bad, but not the greatest thing ever, and it certainly does not feel druggy to me.
This is a sure fire way to torture yourself and your child. I know we all miss the Stripes and well Jack is fine on his own but put him on a tin keyboard and the songs just lose their swagger. They become obnoxious and sad. Its grating enough to slow down bad ass rocking tunes but plink them and someone needs a whoopin’.
After 17 years pounding out Goth punk anthem, Alkaline Trio have finally released the album of their career. Power punk swirls of smart lyrics, catchy hooks, clever melodies. Who are they? Green Day? “I Wanna Be Your Warhol” (“hanging on your wall-alll”) is a song of the year and so is “I Lied To The FBI” and if they can’t maintain this level of smarts, they don’t miss by much. I saw Kris Kristofferson blow Geoge Jones off stage at Carnegie Hall in 2006 and I will stick on to that comment the caveat that Jones had ONE ARM IN A SLING. But even so, I had waited my entire life for that concert and Kris with every reason to be just a nuisance was brilliant with just a guitar.

What do all these bands have in common: Beyonce, Rolling Stones, Depeche Mode, Fall Out Boys, Phoenix, Atoms For Peace, Jay-Z, Barbara Streisand …? They all chose Barclay over Madison Square Garden in an act of unprecedented dissing to the world’s greatest arena. Barclay Center, less than a year old, are slam dunking one show after another and I don’t see why. I am guessing the reason is money but how much more are they paying? Either way, MSG must be right on their toes now.

I don’t always find the Funny or Die videos extremely entertaining but this one certainly is. Picture this, Huey Lewis, from Huey Lewis and the News, and Weird Al Yankovic reacting the famous scene of the book and movie, when Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) murders Paul Allen (Jared Leto) with an ax in his immaculate apartment. It’s hilarious as Huey Lewis gives the same lecture on ‘American Psycho’ than Bateman/Bale did
