He mostly keeps to the three minute mark, hits his spots and leaves, over the other 11 tracks, he never loses his way. The band is tight but they have a straight ahead appeal that isn’t rock as we know it now, and may not be rock as it was then either

Used To You – Lyn Bowtell – An inspired rip of “Brilliant Disguise” and it won’t be dropping till early 2014, but get ready because this is one brilliant country-folk ballad by a woman who should try her hand at rock and roll – A
The sixtieth birthday celebration for MacArthur Fellow John Zorn could be considered a conjugal visit for the museum’s collection of breathtaking art. Numerous musicians who have contributed to the massive body of Zorn’s work performed throughout the day, including singer and abstract vocalist Mike Patton, most known for his work as the lead singer of Faith No More.
The quality is unerring even if unnerving “Hush” is just depressing but in a non plussed positive way, it’s like if you’ve ever made love to somebody while they are crying: so much of the feeling in her songs hits both ways.
One thing is sure, these guys were cool and not the type to give a lecture on how people should enjoy their live moment and leave their phones alone for an hour or two,… I guess I had never seen so many iPhones raised at the same time than during the great elastic-bluesy guitar noise of ‘Don’t Sit Down ‘Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair’ or their hit ‘I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor’,… the whole concert must have been entirely recorded bit by bit, with this constantly-erected electronic forest
They’re all adorable and the video is pretty interesting. A relationship on the rocks ending in disappointment, but the uplifting sense of “who cares I still have my friends”. It’s nice. Also goes to show that their videos have improved artistically as well, because the lighting in it is so poor and it’s not very well done at all

Talk about a catalog to fall back on, the mind boggles as to what they could provide we Kinks Kultists. My assumption is that Ray is too much of a pro to get into the deep album cuts, we’ll be lucky if we get “Harry Rag”
This is the sort of meeting of a subculture defined by so many failed attempts to reunite in a moment and also extened the moment into the present. The moment was the Lower east Side in the late 1970s, and the extension was musical and triumphant.

Unvarnished – Joan Jett And The Blackhearts – You know what you hope it sounds like? That’s exactly what it sounds like; glam rock, power rock, street anthem, soccer game top of the terrace at the top of your lungs singalonga – B+
See the problem with ‘post hardcore’ is that it means absolutely nothing. Unlike metal, or punk, or hardrock or hardcore its a bucket of ‘wtf’, if you dont fit in a real catagory- youre post hardcore. So there Touche’ sits like a big gob surrounded by other non descript masses yearning for attention.
Neil Postman wrote that, when asked about the quality needed to be a good writer, Ernest Hemingway declared, ‘Yes, a built-in, shock-proof, crap detector’, and it seems that too many forget about this. And this applies to readers too, readers should be able to detect crap/bullshit too! Postman was citing pomposity, fanaticism, inanity, superstition (I would say belief) as major role players in bullshit non-detection
The band had mentioned Jon Simmons doing less screamy/yelly vocals and heading more towards singing, which is very much evident in this tune. His voice seems better than before and this song is right in his range. The gravelly feel of some of the song is great and keeps the edge that the band uses to differentiate themselves from the rest.
The Long Lost – David Bronson – The prequel to Story is, at its best, just about the most deliriously deep and beautiful music you will here this year but so lost in its sorrow it can be difficult to penetrate
Some of the cameos were odd, the humor quite bizarre, except Zach Galifianakis screaming ‘you don’t need three drummers’ which was actually funny… but I could have go without it! The special was directed by Roman Coppola and apparently even Ben Stiller and Bono Showed up? Jeeez! Bowie, Bono, is there someone the Montreal band can’t get?
As I write, I am planning to check out Yuck as part of the CMJ fest after loving their debut album and once you get past that there is Joan Jett with (hopefully) more of the same
The Last Thing On My Mind – Tom Paxton – A folk great at the very top of his skills, composes a brilliant love song that’ll live forever – A+
Folk isn’t the most exciting of visual life forms and though Willie Watson was a revelation, I still didn’t learn much from the proceedings. Except that the Folk music revival has stalled and that Tom Paxton wasn’t there, is awesome, and I plan to catch him next time he plays.
The energy was intense, with Nate Ruess the frontman a ball of energy with his incredible range and undeniable smile- it’s always humbling to see. He sounds even better live than recorded, especially with the higher notes. On the recordings of their tunes, Ruess usually hits the highs with his head voice, but live, he sang it in full chest
his income from music has gone down by 92% in the past decade! And isn’t Spotify partly responsible of this? I really don’t get his reasoning. Just suppose his calculation was correct, how could Spotify possibly grow this much during his lifetime, it’s totally unrealistic.
I met Abigail Russell about a year ago, she had contacted me through Facebook after reading a few of my posts about Elliott Smith. We exchanged numbers and even met at a coffee shop, Abigail had a lot to tell me, she had been in rehab with Elliott, had met him quite a few times and was missing him greatly.
When you go to a show you have to put on your big boy pants and understand there are risks, I am so glad this got thrown out. I have seen kids lose a mouthful of teeth at a show and not bitch about lack of babysitting.
A waste of money? Oh, I guess, it is the sort of thing you treat yourself though you know you have no real need for it. It just looks cool, like the mono album CDs in their original covers earlier this century!
Quite good rock fodder filled with moderately swinging rockers and hooks a-plenty, which might not improve on first single “Supersoaker” but don’t leave it in the lurch either. Clanging guitars, would be anthems, real anthems, and catchy little singalongs, they should be able to tour behind this for at least a year – ALBUM OF THE WEEK – B+
I wonder, will Jessie J, once it is released Stateside, kill us here and put her into Ellie Goulding territory, a place I always figured she should be.
Two killer songs here, the new Jessie J and the new to me Ben Pearce. Compare this to the US charts and what do you notice? None of those lousy fake cowboys from Australia and therfore a much much better chart.

On a glorious Saturday afternoon drifting into Saturday evening, 60,000 New Yorkers became “Global Citizens”. Well helping the poor is one thing and music is something else entirely and I for one, actually, will be happy to dismiss the entire enterprise for you.
All of the caveats you can imagine, doesn’t change that that is Lala singing “Da Do Ron Ron”, Charlie singing “Sweets For My Sweet” and yes, the real, the indominatable Ben E. singing “Spanish Harlem”. These are immortal pop tracks.

Except for Nirvana, every song here was released in the past week or two, and of all ten songs 6 are mainstream as mainstream can be, so what this proves is that bubbling under the surface of Billboard charts
Blondie at Highline were just incredible, you could feel Debbie’s star power tingling and X? And John Doe performing “Look How We Are”? Worth the price of admission in itself. Both bands on the same bill is a real thrill, so get thrilled at Roseland on Friday October 4th
S.O.S. In Bel Air – Phoenix – The catchiest song off their last album and neither song nor album has lit the world on fire, but that doesn’t mean this catchy electronic pop rock shouldn’t have done better – B+
I dare her or Schultz to find any misquotation in what I wrote. Unlike Schultz, I didn’t twisted what I have heard one way or another. ‘This interview did not bring any answer’ I wrote at the end of the post, and this was true. Conversely, Schultz seems to have found his, the one that fits so well with the title of his book
Last year I had a real good time and this year, well, this year I have no idea what to expect but I hope to get more of the same. For me, a working stiff, lunch gigs are where it is at, and the KEXP Radio shows seem like a smart move.

This isn’t state of the art, Timberland is a little out of time for one thing, but it functions as a a 22 song dance suite with the occassional song jutting out. It has scope but not depth and I admire it and enjoy it.
Spanking Charlene a band that makes you wonder whether the first word is an adjective or a verb. Spanking Charlene are such a great , tasty vicious bunch of rockers, undoubtedly it is an adjective. Plus, Charlene is a bad ass, I am sure if anybody gets spanked it’s the fans
Who else could have written “Hey Mama” and “Robocop” and then, in 2013 come back with the impenetrable brilliance of “New Slave”? It doesn’t take me to point this out to you, now, does it?

More Than – Au Revoir Simone – This reminds me of all those indie pop bands with a touch more better living with electricity thrown into the mix. Sort of Pains of Being Pretty At Heart – B+
