Where 12-24 year Olds Find Their Music

It really is tough trying to figure out where to find new music but for all of youtube’s ability to make personal listening playlists, I don’t see how it works as a place to discover music. It seems more like a place to stream music once you have already discovered it.

Transformers: Age of Extinction reviewed

Snappy action, sitcom comedy, an old timer action hero (Mark Wahlberg) and his hotter than July teenage daughter (Nicola Peltz) walk right out of “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” as a loser inventor and his daughter struggle with eviction and poverty (Hollywood style, of course) before Cade Yeager (Cade? Is that a name? Cade???) brings home not just any Transformer but Optimus Prime

A Look Back At One Of My Favorite Albums: Elvis Costello's "My Aim Is True"

“Oh I know that she has made a fool of him” Costello sings in “No Dancing”, “Hey girl I wanna shake your hand, all I ever do is bow”, “I wanna get right through the way I feel for you”, “I can’t be wounded because I’ve got no heart”, “they told me everything was guaranteed, somebody somewhere must have lied to me”, “if I was a Saint with a silver cup…” , “I can hear you whispering as I crawl by your door”… it is like every line goes bing in the back of your pain valve.

Hillsong Worship "No Other name" Reviewed

This is unspeakable but it isn’t exactly songs. Songs have catchy melodies, and smart lyrics, and you can do something with them other than sneer. There is something shameful about this product. It abuses Christianity for a bob or two, and sure, Hillsong didn’t invent it but this goes a long way to perfecting.

Stubhub… Cheaper Than Ticketmaster???

Stubhub for sold out gigs we know, but it is also a place where people unload tickets they don’t want or speculators go to dump the excess tickets in their world. Helen Bach is such an expert she will wait till the last minute and pick em up as the prices topple, I got burnt on Fiona Apple that way once so tend not to have the stomach for it but this is really the open market at its best.

Tim Howard is 35 years old and sports, soccer, is more or less a young man’s game, but the Manchester United goalie from New Jersey who carried the USA team past the UK for one and Italy for another, may prove capable of doing what Pele couldn’t 40 years ago, with that in mind, US ball clubs should through mountains of money at the man so he can singlehandedly turn the US onto, dare I call it, football.

Rolf Harris Sentenced to Five Years For Child Abuse

To claim it is an aberration is sophistication, it happens all the time because children are vulnerable and people are unscrupulous. To claim children are in a state of grace denies the reality of the world around them. And to claim most people don’t feel attracted to children may well be true but that doesn’t change that millions upon millions of people are attracted to children.

My feeling about Sia is something like, there isn’t an EDM track her tender, lush but very powerful voice can’t make better but without the dressing, her songs aren’t as strong as they need to be. But I could be wrong and so she gets the album of the week (round one). Industrial dance isn’t my scene but “Last Tangle In Paris” is the album title of the year.

Music: The New Reality TV

Ah, yes, reality. Now that the script writers of reality shows are suing for royalties the question as to what is real becomes murkier though Lennon’s “nothing is real” probably comes closest. And this sense of nothing is real invaded the music world this week.

So when after this weekend’s Glastonbury Festival, the usual complaints about her failure to actually, well, sing, this was her short and sweet reply to the UK tabloid The Sun: “My boobs are fake, my hair’s fake, but what is real is my voice and my heart. Her Rep said: “She sings live. Some people don’t know an amazing singer when they hear one.”
