I have been more like Hamlet than anything human when it comes to this concert. It’s been on my radar for ages and for at least one reason, the last time I saw the pre-eminent purveyor of the Great American Songbook Michael Buble, he transformed a bunch of teen girls screaming for Katy Perry and Justin Bieber into very chuffed fans with only “Haven’t Met you Yet” to seduce them with back in 2010.
That’s the plus side, the minus is he feels like a light weight and even if he didn’t seem somehow shallow, the voice is gorgeous but a touch nasal and it lacks gravitas and last years To Be Loved, seemed to chase its tale but get nowhere. It was perhaps his most typical of all his albums and following, well Christmas, but really Crazy Love, it seemed like a career in neutral.
Plus, I didn’t like the price.
But to cut a long story short, the setlist sold me. Buble mixes originals with modern pop strokes and Frank Sinatra covers and isn’t that enough. At least SOMEBODY IS DOING IT STILL. And any way, he is better than Idina Menzel.
It is tomorrow at MSG -try Stubhub, ticket prices are falling.
Here is the setlist plus Spotify (except for “All You Need Is Love” -I couldn’t find a decent version
