July 12th: To Have And Have 4Knot

The Fort Knox Of Alt
The Fort Knox Of Alt

Really? Four years of 4Knot already? The Village Voice’s kind give back to nyc music fans with a one day festival of the collest bands in town.

I’ve managed to miss the other three though I found the names enticing enough. 2013 included Kurt Vile, Marnie Stern and Parquet Courts to start with, a hardcore alt rocky kinda concept somewhere between hip and misbegotten. I’ve wanted to catch marnie Stern for a while now and I am not sure why I didn’t go except I probably had something else to do because I always have something else today.

On Saturday July 12th, I am meant to be going to the Warped Tour gig at Jomes Beach but this year I am going to check out  the Village Voice’s 4Knots show. Here is the line up:

Mac DeMarco

Nude Beach

Radkey

Re-Tros

Speedy Ortiz

Those Darlins

Viet Cong

Dinosaur Jr

Of these bands, I’ve seen three  (Nude Beach, Speedy Ortiz and Dinosaur Jr) and have heard  two others (Mac deMarco and Those Darlins, plus heard of one more (Viet Cong – though less to do with hip underground bands, more to do with hip underground soldiers)  and two of them (Radkey and Re-Tros) are a complete mystery to me.

Now, I am not sure of the timing here, I am going to the Ab-Soul afterparty at Webster Hall, I figure doors at 7, and we won’t get the great rapper till after 830… but I won’t risk it and will leave my friend Jahn Xavier to cover Dinosaur jr for me, while I  dash up (er? 13th street) town to catch the purveyor of my fave rap album of the year so far.

So any way 4Knots is Saturday, July 12th from 1:00PM-8:00PM at South Street Seaport in Lower Manhattan, completely free, near the sea on a hot July Saturday… sounds like fun.

Meanwhile, here is the 4Knots Spotify setlist so you can ready yourself.
