The set was so well paced but it was hard not to be. Regina has so many great songs but is really a schticky chick: she pulls out the Music Hall “Sailor Song” and is as willing to go deep into her Russian roots and pull out a gypsy folkie refrain as an glammy popness or a classical U Turn.

The movie closes with Conors scribbled lyric and him sitting and singing it, “I can’t live here but I’ll I’ll probably die here…” he moans. It is terrific. Better than anything on the last Bright Eyes

Musically, it is awesome. T-Rex, Curtis Mayfield, Barry White and of course, the one and only Alice Cooper in a cameo.

Only The Horses – Scissor Sisters – A loss leader from their upcoming album, this is a disco ballad which takes advantage of Jake’s falsetto on a song that isn’t all there. There is better on the way. – Grade: B

This is a minor masterpiece of mellow, far from Hollywood slumming, it is a very fine interpretation of some famous, some half forgotten , classic radio songs. If Rita chooses to do a follow up, may I suggest Bread’s “Everything I Own”?

In the current Rolling Stone, Against Me”s lead singer Tom Gabel came out as transgender (he wants to be a woman) and had this to say: “However fierce our band was in the past, imagine me, six foot two, in heels, fucking screaming in someone’s face”.

Less a one hit and more a one world wonder, this is an excellently sculpted piece of reggae from the strange Israeli guy who is only still beloved by those who follow him. Or those who should – Grade: B+

When Ryan Adams played there, the .org all but crashed. I hopped in the subway at 1115am and managed to nab a ticket from the box office. Carnegie’s website just isn’t large enough to handle the occasional big bam boom.

Micky takes his legacy more seriously than Davy held his. He has a better memory for his days in the Monkees. He embraces what he accomplished without the clowing Davy brought to it. At the reunion concert, the Monkees didn’t need Micky’s hard sell I Am legend. Solo, it might be very much a lesson in popular music.

With all that, why didn’t Lionsgate send it straight to video nstead of publicly humiliate the singer? What did they think would happen? NOBODY even heard of the movie at all?

This is a pretty impressive list, Best Coast, Lambert and Beach House are must gets. Plus, Conor includes that movie he did a coupla years ago for that charity and it is real good.

How is this for a claim to fame? I started listening to the Russian giant at the recommendation of Glenn Tilbrook, as Glenn attempted to explain that instant access and easy melody were not the be all and end all of music. The piano here is all cascading notes, like a man tumbling down flight after flight of stairs. It is unnerving – Grade: A

Pride of place goes to Justin Townes Earle at Webster Hall on Thursday , not on the strength of the admittedly excellent show he put on at Joe’s Pub some 4 years part, or even his dad’s uproarious story about Justin as a teenager hiding a gun, but purely because Earle’s new album is the best album of the year.

Keane over Richard Hawley? You’re kidding me right? How the hell did that happen. Incidentally, they haven’t released Hawley Stateside… what’s the hold up there? The Cribs? Good for them. And Whte hanging on. Kinda heavy on rock and roll this week.

Rita Ora, signed to s.carter’s label, is gonna cross the pond and make a splash Stateside. Perhaps it will finally break Tinie while it’s at it. Tulesa I am less sure about -it is really dance gussied up as pop.

Aha, here is the pop move we were expecting from the experimental band that heralded Brooklyn as the New Renaissance city. An entirely addictive piece of weirdness with speedy vocals and cowbells and lyric that seem as precise a metaphor as bees could ever hope for – Grade: A

Being a mother is nothing, being a great mother is something special. And I’ve known a few, my co-editor Helen Bach is one, my sister Nadia is another. Childhood is our age of myths and a strong, kind guide, is eseential to a happy adulthood. It is nearly impossible to be a happy adult if you were a miserable child.

If the rest of the album is as good as “The Only Place”, Best Coast will be huge. I wish Tom Jones would record a straight up pop album,. And I wonder about the McCartney extended. Oooooh, Richard Hawley!

In The Belly Of The Brazen Beast – The Cribs – The UK manufacture these brother boy guitar rock bands and some are better than others. These guys sing close harmony real well, not bad lyrics and though they are a little average the songs will get their claws in if you give them a chance . – Grade: B+

Cyr -Cate Le Bon – Another Bronte wannabe with a neat trick up her sleeves: she disrupts English folk moves with abrupt outbursts of hard rock guitar. The effective is mesmirizing alerness – Grade: A-

It’s a mixed bunch, most of em are terrible. Chris Evans was pretty good in his movie, but here Captain America is an irritating square. The Hulk (Mark Rufaflo) is worse, for some reason they decide Hulk can control his anger and fight as part of a team.. . when did that happen? Hawkeye is blander than blander, the Black Widow is losing her looks and Thoor looks like a male stripper.

Circle, Square, Triangle – Test Icicles – Blood Orange’s first band were an influential indie dance band from England and from (gasp!) 2006. Seven years later half the indie bands on Earth sound exactly like this: Fire Engines meets LCD – Grade: A

Stronger” has been hanging on for so long, it will be soon duking it out with Carrie. Of the two, Carrie is a purer strain of country pop product, Kelly kinda knows what she is and is willing to bend mostyly because she learnt her lesson a couple of years ago and released her only stiff against the advise of clive davis. Plus? they are both American Idol alumni. Kelly would’ve broken through any way.

Carrie Underwood is terrible live and her dozens of pro country songwriters all sound the same. Norah Jones is the Ambient of music. And B.o.B. won’t get a hit off his crappy pop move.

Regina in Somalia is drinking too much, thinking on some guy (?), and can’t sleep because the couple in the next room is fucking to one of her songs. I saw her perform this with just guitar at the Beacon in 2009… quite simply superb! Grade: A+

I Got News for You – Off! – This stuff never gets old, though Keith may one day. A speedy, noisy proto-hardcore three chord wonder off one of the Eps now snuggled into a first album, I haven’t seen them live yet but I will – Grade: A

Wolfe and Schooner come across as journeyman who can’t seem to twist away from the journey. Forget swimming pools and hookers, how about diapers and holidays in Disneyworld?

Yup, I am gonna try for both of them. Los Campesinos last two albums were disappointments and when I caugh em two years ago at Webster Hall I was aghast. But, like I said, two years ago nd Garth is a true original wacko and LPR is a terrific room.

This music is so intensely beautiful it took me entirely surprise. I expected to give it a coupla minutes and move on. Pat has a beautiful soprano to falsetto voice with a disquieting edge. he sounds like he is haunting his own songs.
