The Wanted are playing the Stones to One Direction’s the Beatles, except leather jacket does not a tough band make. And The Wanted sound more like Train.

Damned for all eternity as the coke fiend who beat on Fannie Mae, with a resume everything else gets overlooked. Like, for imstance, he discovered Fannie Mae. And like this piece of boogie was the harbinger to a sea change in popular music – Grade: A+
They look like Ivy League folk boys, like Mumford And Sons, but, on stage at least, they give into the music all the time and have a thunderous sound, more than capable of intricating violin and mandolin into a song, more than happy to throw out everything but drums and handclaps.
– Beth Ditto is probably the best disco singer of her generation, and if that’s enough, this is enough. But I am less keen on her songs, anonymous disco material, less synthetic than I am used to but not quite memorable enough. Exceptions to this rule abound and “Move In The Right Direction” -well, no need to wait for the remix there – Grade: B+
If I Was A Bell- Emily Loesser – Yup, Jean Simmons was lipsynching on the movie version of “Guys And Dolls”… as she should have bee. Emily Loesser,Fran’s kid, did a stellar job, especially on this sexual awakakening masterpiece – Grade: A
The House That Heaven Built – Japandriods – Hand clapping, footstamping, yelping hook, a raw rocker vocalist and a tune worthy of Superchunk – Grade: A
Screeching like a banshee with her black hair flaying and three keyboards and a a sound loop around her, one guy on keyboards and guitar, another chick on keyboards, a drummer and Terra Lopez herself fiddling with nobs before moving her hands mid-air like a refuge from a Lew Grossman novel where the sun never sets though it damn well should.
Words of affection so personal, a whispered conversation between the two: “listen to your Daddy’s song, making love is wrong…” The song is adrift in time, it is like a hug between a father and child, “We believe that we can’t be wrong” is such a proiose for a happy, endless childhood. It makes me miss something that never happened to me.
What a tremendously boring chart! What a supremely tedious, treading water bunch of songs. Individually, there are some good and some bad ones, but collectively I can’t keep my eyes open
Of the Three American Idol contestants I like, I like Lambert mosts, and this terrific dance album deserves its success. Meanwhile, how is beach house beating out Best Coast???
I Want U Back – Cher Lloyd – Yup, another English chick singer, former X Factory, dance pop phenom. But Cher is really cool, she looks loke a pixie, the thumping keyboards is a first rate hook, and she has a great come one, “Remember all the things that we did first?” Grade: B+
The new songs are played straight up, with Dave’s mumbling vocals and spaced quietude , fronting a band who can’t do much but work on the songs but tell us to clap. There is a reason why Phish are such stick in the muds on stage, the music is hard to play. M&A have precisely the same problem.
I just read a review of the band in New York Press, who compared them to a ride on Space Mountain -yep, the eleven years and counting band, lead you to those kinda comparisons. Lead by Danny Barria, who works the sound with the heel of his shoes, and sings in a manner that belies the distancing
rock nyc wonders, if these tickets were being stolen and Ticketmaster were not being paid, do you think TM would be so indolent and lazy about the problem? Where os the police? Why are they not shutting down TM until they fix the software? This is theft, shouldn’t there be somebody held responsible?
Outernationals bring their firebrand form of rock and roll tonight to Dominion at 428 Lafayette. They ht the stage at 10pm for the grand tour finale. “FROM TEXAS BORDER TOWNS THRU ARIZONA O’ODHAM LANDS TO SAN DIEGO, THE GULF COAST TO THE PACIFIC THEN BACK TO TEXAS TO PLAY WITH CALLE 13, THRU CHICAGO ALL THE WAY TO THE ROTTEN APPLE…’
Super heavy kinda sucked and no tour was forthcoming, and I guess the Stones are stilling working on next years tour, but after that? This would appear to be a way forward for Mick. Who wouldn’t want to see Mick perform a night of blues classics with Beck on guitar?
What I am claiming is every thing they touch they bring enormous passion to. The entire album brims with this passionate over the top zenithed out intensity and love. Maybe Eutopia take themselves too seriously, but maybe they deserve to.
Teenage Bass – Shit Robot – DFA’s resident real deal DJ takes, not a bass line, but a lick, and runs variations of it, in complementary keys, with drum patterns submerged and emered in different layers. For seven minutes – Grade: B+
Tristen has a certain charm but also a certain awkwardness, and after awhile she seems frustrated., with a wry revealing aside and a snide “I’m gonna ask Justin for his autograpgh. To put us in our place?
She was one half of the 1970s as surely as Prince was one half of the 80s and Biggie Smalls one half of the 90s. Her effect on dance through her (lack of presence) is definitive and the building blocks of Industrial, tecno and house.
everything about Best Buy is excellent, from its 85 foot LCD Marquee to its state of the art everything down the basement, from its smart as hell, half GA seating and half SRO at the foot foot of the stage standing. And most of all, its many many nooks and crannies from where you can perch and see the stage fine, this is the club that sets the standards.
liars lie and playas play and at least there is this: No Jay-Z for awhile and after that pathetic track for his daughter, good riddance. I commend the sin, hate the sinner but love the sin if you will! Indeed, here is a list of artists we hope will follow in his footsteps…
Here is the problem, and it is not the Old School nature 1990s quotient hip hop travellers, it is the lack of a really big name. From Slick rick to Salt N Peppa, the last hit these guys had were in a previous century
The episode has nothing close to the imagination LG shows every day of her life. And Simpsons has shown very, very often. With a wealth of ways to go, the Simpsons leans back on the tried and true. Again. It is time to pull the plug on the Simpsons.
A couple of years before Mick Jagger legitimized the Stones also ran on SNL, Hatfield beat him to it during a daytrotter session. Hatfield’s up and downs with touring all well documentated (by her in a memoir) but never before has “if I could stick a pen in my heart, spill it all over the stage…” seemed less histrionic: a glimpse into what it takes Juliana (and Mick) to get up and do it – Grade:A
“The diversity and strength of the music SummerStage presents is arguable as well rounded and representative of New York City (and the World) as you will find anywhere, and Im extremely proud of that.”
I caught Sinead and Van Halen earlier this year. The VH reunion beat out the Beach Boys gigwise, so if you have tix and now aren’t going… well, it sucks to be you!
So I went in search of Cate on stage, only to discover I missed her at Mercury Lounge in February and more fool me. Proof again that in the 21st century, you can’t keep your ear close enough to the grounnd.
”I was probably 12. He was super cool. You’re 12 years old and he’s the world’s most famous overgrown kid, who’s running around your friend’s apartment with you. It was pretty wild.”
A little on the skimpy side but the keeper is Joey Ramone and the the extended Ram, one of McCartney’s best solo efforts with an astounding 23 songs, are keepers. Is Lupe throwing down tasters for a new album? Yeah, it’s been two years.
I’m Still The Same Person – Sister Crayon – How were they last night? I dunno yet, but if this is anything to go by they were a haunted buncha kids with a good chick singer, sound effects and keyboards aplenty in this Sacramento indie band – Grade: B+
His set at Best Buy on Saturday night was the man we have seen for over 35 years; playing his solo material, more, than that, his 21st Century solo material, looking back atsome mid-90s solo career highs and throwing in an occasional Jam song for taste.
They are like waking dreams of life on what might well be the best coast. It beats down on you what might be the endless summer, heat of the day till the night when the beach is closed and aging and longing and time in the only place moves slowly longingly away.
even if you have already seen all the funniest moments in his ode to totalitarian”The Dictator”, there are enough good yucks along the way to make it a pleasant killing of an hour and a bit. But if the coming attractions made you think you were in for something as great as “Borat” or “Bruno”, that ain’t gonna happen.
Now that the question is no longer when they graduate fom Rockwood to Mercury Lounge (Satuday at 7p), it is what will Darlingside, a mersmerizing mix of indie rock and strings, do now they’ve got there. Their 2010 EP is addictive and the new songs show no rust so I expect it will be excellent. Secret Ingrediient: the lead vocalist could lead Average White Band
I am surprised TD charted so high and I am surprised Garbage charted so low. If Shirley can’t get a hit off it, the album is gonna be dead in the water. As for Tenacious D -apparently it doesn’t need one.
Tulisa is yet another X Factored in star and Saturdays the sort of band that hasn’t cracked the States since Spice Girls and the top three songs should remain there through August.
I missed rock nyc’s Henry Sims turn as the “Cabaret” MC in the musical last week because a) I wasn’t invited and b) It was in Connecticut; so I have to make do with Cummings star making turn from the 1990s, where his preposperous ode to a chimpanzee takes a terrifying twist on the very last line, spat out with venom – Grade: A
Watching it is a little unpleasant. He is like the Billy Ray Cyrus of folk.It is a punishing self regard. Compare it to the last time I saw Kate McGarrigle on stage with Martha Wainwright, there the familial regard was so sweet. Their love shone off the stage. Friday night it seemed stunted as LW3 and his crack band, performed a very good set and yet a very sad set
In her debut album, MIA protegee Rte Rte makes exactly one mistep, and it stars Ethel Merman. Otherwise, this is as bright and shiny a rhythmic artifact as the album cover, with MIA on 3 tracks, Robyn on one, and Akon on a song of the year. This is how modern pop is done. Grade: A-
Bloody Mother Fucking Asshole – Martha Wainwright – So, without further ado, Martha takes her place besides her parents and big brother as major as major can be with this folkie slash and burn condemnation of her famous Daddy – Grade: A+
I was real disappointed and it has me thinking whether I overestimated the album. Justin has perfected the art of fake intimacy, maybe he wants to try the real thing and see how far that gets him.
saw them last October opening for Screaming females and was suitably awed, and might go back in for another dip. Among other reasons, the Don Giovanni crew should be there and I am eagerly awaiting the debut Modern Hut album! I need inside dope!!!
This is what we’ve what we’ve been waiting forsince 2005? This crap? It is like being mugged by a wet noodle of sound, from the woman who perfected the nursery rhyme singsong with “Extraordinary machine”, a twee singalong until she goes all husky on us – Grade: B
Summerstage has always been a blast but if it feels like a bigger, wider blast in the past decade, part of the thanks must go to Artistic Director Erika Elliott. rock nyc had the pleasure of speaking with Ms. Elliott and followed up with written questions. The interview will be posted soon but we thought we’d give you a brief introduction to the gifted woman.
Directed by Jose Vega, who also works with Muse And Music, the visuals are an animated wonder and I plan to write it when I can figure out how. As for Veronica, the one song I’ve heard is terrrific: sort of old school Brit rock with heavy keyboards. If you like their FB page you will see what I mean.
don’t know Only Sons material particular well and though I did know “It’s A Boy” a dystopia about the pre-ordained manufacturing of a child’s life, and iit didn’t connect here. Jack’s voie is a little on the light side and taking up about a third of the stage, nothing he did could really connect with us.
of all the best seller charts in all the world, this best seller chart is the poppiest. This top 10’s idea of rock is Train, of hip hop is Flo Rida. And every single song is as catchy as catchy will ever get!
After White, Tank is the album to get The man looks like a Tank and has a pretty way with an r&b ballad and though he is buried alive in the usual production goop, the man has real talent.
A flat out masterpiece off her up coming album, stopped the show on Tuesday. Smashed, cascading piano notes beat on the hope disappointment choruses, while Regina gets her full fledged pop ballad on in the verses. This needs to break pop big time – Grade: A
