I prefer new Mariah to new U2, so what do I know. I may be the only person in the world to adore last years Me. I Am Mariah, a fine album marred by a crap name and way way way too many songs. But I loved it any way and regret blowing off the Beacon Theatre Christmas run (the bad taste from a lousy New Year’s Eve 2010 gig lingered), if it had been the show that just opened at the Coliseum in Ceasar’s Palace, I’d have found a way to catch it
Infinity – Mariah Carey – Wow, could this sound any more 1990s? This is not even full on hip hop flavor Mariah; this is Boys II Men flavorful with a little speed singing to give it a contemporary feel. The song ain’t bad and her range remains amazing. Mariah is having something of a great 2010s, not that anybody is noticing – B+
If they had called it Beautiful and cut it to 40 minutes it would have hit big time, as it is it keeps on delivering the goods to people who don’t want to hear it. Take off Mariah’s name and put in Beyonce’s name. What would happen then?
This best songs is in order of preference, this is where I stand song wise and most of these are singles as well, though I don’t think the top two will change much in the next five months, If you Have spotify, give it a listen.
Noise Vs Beauty – Bassnectar – The House album of the year lives up to its name as one of the best DJs Lorin Ashton, the Santa Cruz party album who added metal to a taste for bass. This is a step forward, a hard pressed masterpiece of beats and sound effects.
I Could Easily (Fall In Love With You) – Cliff Richard And The Shadows – On Saturday, Cliff mentioned recording in Nashville and you might wonder how he would do with country, this is a modified country (not even rockabilly lick) drenched in melodic goodness – A
“So for me, allowing you to believe I don’t care about the promotion of the Mariah record and I don’t see you screaming at me, that this song and that song needs to be a single, goes against everything that I’m about, believe me! Everything that you question will be answered ASAP!!!!””
Yes, folks, at the top of the charts is the only Coldplay album I don’t actually hate. Young Chris problem as a composer is he is a magpie and too obvious, as a lyricist he doesn’t have a poet’s soul but as a manic depressive he will do nicely.
The Rangers have made it to the Finals of the Stanley Club, but, while hockey is not, by any stretch of the language, football, and of the big three team sports comes in last, I will absolutely take, It is much more fun than watching LeBron and the rest of the Heat toying with NBA teams for fun and profit, before slaughtering them.
At the top, that Mariah Carey Stevie wonder cop is brilliant and I hope it breaks the way “#beautiful” failed to, and what has already broken pop is two huge songs with Iggy Azalea. Both “Problems” and “Fancy” are summer hits for sure. Anything else? Chloe Howl EP is out but probably won’t make a dent till next month.
And then you hear the sound of a bottle of beer being poured for “Thirsty” and already you’re turned off and the following hour, yes hour, of music is all over the place. God knows we don’t need babies gurling, it didn’t work for Beyonce and it doesn’t work fo rCarey
Oh how the circumstances have changed indeed, Conor’s comeback album already forgotten and that album was too long as well. The best lengthed album this week was Haunted Heart –clocking in at a jaunty 30 minutes, you can stick it on repeat and wait for “Something That Feels Bad Is Something That Feels good” to show up againt.
Rumor – Chloe Howl – a bluesy banger but saved from anything approaching ordinariness by that thick accent and smart words, no it isn’t “No Strings” but it will do – B+
Let Me Down Gently – La Roux – We haven’t heard from the neo-new romantic 80s inspired disco duo since 2009 but this lovely dance ballad is a haunting beauty and harbors very well for their return; hang out for the tempo change in the middle – A-
This is Sam Smith’s week, we only live in it. Undoubtedly, In The Lonely Hour is the album to beat. If only for the first single, “Stay With Me”, this is a major (first!) release by a great singer. Othersie, I am listening to the new Sharon Von Etten as we speak and like it don’t love it, really liked the Robyn EP, and am looking forward to Christian rocker Crowder, anti-Christs EYEHATEGOOD and Mariah Carey who lives somewhere between the two.
In this article published in Frontiers in Systems Neuroscience, a group of researchers has found that people who took valproate, a drug used in the treatment of epilepsy, anorexia, migraine, panic attack and bipolar disorder, learned to identify pitch significantly better than those taking placebo
Here we go again, another singer receiving big bucks to perform in a less-than-okay country. Mariah Carey adds one mark to a long list (Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce, Usher, Kanye West, Nelly Furtado, 50 Cent, Sting,…) as she was paid $1 million to perform for Angolan President
I find it annoying when artists go on and on about how they do it for the ‘the fans’ and how they are so in love with each and every ‘fan’. Don’t kid yourself, you’re a necessary evil. They do it for the cash and they do it for the fame- you just have to be provide it.
The Art Of Letting Go – Mariah Carey – Mariah turns her back on the pop moves of a decade with this major r&b ballad and makes it pay off – A-
The last time I saw Billy was at the 12-12-12 gig, and the time before that the closing of Shea Stadium. He was terrific in one and not terrible in another but absolutely the perfect way to take out (or bring in) 2013 – 2014.
