Alternative rocknyc For Saturday, June 6th, 2020: Governors Ball This Afternoon, Jason Isbell This evening
I didn’t realize the rest of the album would be so iffy.
the sperm donor was musician David Crosby
If David Crosby Worries About Losing His Home Because Of A Tour Cancellation, What Will Happen To The Rest Of The Music World?
So touring is all we got. That’s really the only thing that we can do to make any money’
Chrissie Hynde is at the Hollywood Bowl on Saturday
During the tour, Crosby will be performing selections from his latest album 2014’s Croz, and his 1971 solo debut, If I Could Only Remember My Name, as well as songs from his bands CSN, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and The Byrds.
This was City Winery, you can’t find ticket brokers for it, they don’t provide tickets so why didn’t I think, “oh ok, I haven’t heard Croz yet, but if it is a dog I’ll just blow off the $60 or whatever and if it is good? So much the better, right? That was what a smart person would do but nooooo.
And I happen to know that he’s hanging out with somebody that’s a purely poisonous predator now. And that’s karma. He’s gonna get hurt. But I understand why it happened. I’m just sad about it. I’m always sad when I see love get tossed in the gutter.’
The thing is, Croz works much better as background music, certainly every time you hear a lyric you will wonder why you’re bothering to listen unless you’re in the market for stuff like “Fear is the antithesis of peace.” It doesn’t pay to think too hard on the mutton headed quasi-hippie weirdness and melancholia.
With my friend Jahn Xavier, I went to the Allen Room at Lincoln Center and was floored by Jason Isbel’s “American Songbook” set. You can see it for yourself as part of the PBS “Live From Lincoln Center” program when it airs later this year, till then take my word, it was a career defining masterpiece.
12:51 – The Strokes – “Talk to me I’m older” Casablancas requests and it opens the door on what would have their eagerly awaited sophomore album which unlike this textured guitar fuzzy tuneful masterstroke, didn’t live up to exceptions – A
On second thoughts, maybe the David Crosby album is really pretty good. It always takes forever for Crosby songs to click into your earwaves but when they do they are sometimes worth the wait. Another album I may very well have underestimated? Drowners. I just wish the rhythm section was better.
How Deep Is Your Love – Bee Gees – Exquisitely perfect disco ballad that changed the Gibbs brothers once and for all and the best line? “And you may not think I care for you when you know down inside that I really do” – A+
Give me Back My Hometown – Eric Church – Somewhere between country and classic rock, catchy chorus-hook though the song is nothing special, it isn’t bad in a feel bad sort of way – B
The weather is killing live music and the release schedule is killing the album releases… except last year I had 8 albums on my best of list, and this year it will be at least 11. I don’t like David Crosby enough to be impressed that he is my pick of the week.
This guy, one of the legends of our time has a financial net worth of just $40 million dollars. Would you expect that to be more? But hey- the bills are paid and at that advanced age how it’s good to earn royalties.
