Dilated Peoples At Amoeba, Tuesday August 12th 2014

Their rhymes made me smile and they were really the nicest people around, as Evidence told he wanted to meet and talk to everybody after the show despite the fact they had another show (their album release party) at the Whisky the same day. Why Hip Hop can’t be more about these thoughtful and well crafted songs instead of the commercial violent trash that has become the norm

Queen Caveat At The Echoplex, Monday August 11th 2014

The whole set was an adrenaline-charged bullet sent to the face of the Echoplex crowd, which was cheering up in response, even more when Little appropriately dedicated a song to the great Robin Williams who sadly died the same day. She has already received terrific comparisons, such as Debbie Harry, because of her sexy rebellious blondness and or Joan Jett, because of her punk energy, so this has to be an excellent boost for the young band.

Spoon At Amoeba, Wednesday August 6th 2014, Review

I didn’t hear any earworm among the new ones but it was my first listening… and even though there would be no big hit – Spoon never really got one anyway – they have already sold out the Hollywood Forever Cemetery on August 8th and have filled up the large Amoeba store on Wednesday night like true rock stars.

Shooter Jennings At Amoeba, Tuesday August 5th 2014, Reviewed

He was quite talkative between the songs explaining that the project started in 2012 as someone representing himself as the producer of George’s upcoming record, asked him if I had any songs to submit. He wrote two songs and it turned out that this guy wasn’t really a producer, but when Jones died, the songs were still there, waiting… and he got the idea of this new tribute.

10 Songs: Tuesday, August 5th, 2014

Kisses For Breakfast – Melissa Steel – Already a hit in the UK, this is a huge summersmash in some alternative world, in this world it is a pop reggae move, a sort of warm Caribbean caress of a track that missed its window of opportunity, with dance Hall great Popcaan toasting – A

Arcade Fire After Party At The Bootleg, Saturday August 2nd 2014

Win continued to spin some tunes till 3 am, and I appreciated the Bowie and Nirvana touch at the end of the night.. I almost forgot, there was also a piñata full of candies, so it was definitively a real party,… I left the theater with a handful of candies and sparkling confetti, hearing the security guard shouting ‘good night’ to the people talking and drinking, who were still not ready to leave…

Katy Perry – Barclay Center – July 25th, 2014 – Modern pop musics big sister plays hit after hit with a sort of las vegas meets ancient Egypt motif, just to prove lost love ain’t lost life and roaring is easy if you try hard enough.

Jon Bon Jovi And The Kings Of Suburbia At The Count Basie Theatre, Wednesday, July 30th, 2014, reviewed

No, Jon, it is not alright. It isn’t remotely close to alright, this is a dire, depressing version of one of the few bearable Bon Jovi songs. Yes, that was the worst moment, but there was lots and lots of competition: the last song “American Pie”, the ridiculous “Baba O’Reilly” not remotely saved by the violinist, “Bad Medicine” overblown and heavy…

The Muffs At Amoeba, Tuesday July 29th 2014

The most striking thing about seeing the Muffs live, is their laid-back attitude, as well as the casual chatting and deadpan humor between the songs, as if they were some stand-up comedians doing the Muffs routine before bursting into their short punk songs. Kim looked almost exactly as she did at Burgerama

Conor Oberst Central Park SummerStage Tuesday July 29, 2014 Reviewed

IIt’s a weird realization, feeling like I’ve grown out of who I’ve considered my favorite musician for years. I’ll still listen to him, I don’t skip Bright Eyes when it comes up on shuffle, but his newer work doesn’t appeal to me and some of his older stuff is unlistenable. Conor’s grown up, and I have too, and we’ve gone our separate ways.

Conor Oberst At Central Park Summerstage, Tuesday, July 29th, 2014, Reviewed

Played with Bright eyes-y full throttle intensity, plus horns, plus back up singers, plus two girls on guitar, plus Conor emoting the holy fuck out of them, they supercharged the evening. I didn’t like the horns on “Hundreds Of Ways on the recorded version, but it worked here and the three song opening did something Conor didn’t quite do at Carnegie Hall a couple of years ago, it grew him up without changing him.

Lael Neale At El Cid, Saturday, July 26th, 2014 Reviewed

It is just probably a question of time, Lael’s quiet music sure managed to captivate the audience and the chatting stopped as soon as she started playing, which is not an easy thing to accomplish in a bar, but her apparition on stage had something from an angel’s and this can shut up a lot of conversations.

UK Top 10 Singles 8-2-14

This is as lame as the UK charts have been all, all dance pop more or less all the time, it lacks any change of paste (ok, “Budapest” but otherwise?), when heard like this it feels like extremely manufactured and derivative pop pap, which it is. I meant without the fun.
