Rolling Stone's Review Column Has a Bad Hair Day

The album is a complete disaster except for Whitney Houston’s “His Eye On The Sparrow” . Sure, she didn’t have the voice she once had, she was 47 years old for fucks sake. But really, on an album with Jordin Sparks and some Nigerian actress, there is no competition to mention.

Amen – Meek Mill – Featuring Drake, he is really quite lively here, but, note the caveat emptor: Maybach Music. This is kinda funny, sexy braggard, and the sample is excellent (a little piano motif). SO while minor, minor is an improvement with this posse – Grade: B

Believe or not, Phillip is the least boring person on this list. Idol winner has a terrific first single, and I am just wondering why it took so long to hit the charts. I am now offficially sick of most of this top ten and just hope and pray I never hear it again

I just don’t buy into Ross, his skills as a rhymer are overrated and while his flow is worldclass, I can’t believe he would use the best bass in the business to such little effect. Bieber still going up the charts? Apparently, he has managed to grow up.

Pet Shop Boys' "Winner" EP Reviewed

The recently released EP Winner, offers up a study in perfection with the Bee Gees cover, “I Started A Joke”. Neil always sounds as though he is a part the start crying, and Chris is always like his kid brother, tugging at his sleeve.

What I Learnt About Music From Robert Christgau

When I started writing about music, I was heavy into punk. But one day I received an Ashford And Simpson album meant for another writer via the Village Voice. I called up Christgau and he recommended I listen to it, “You might learn something”. I did and I did.

Boys Noize XTCatic

I’ve seen quite a bit of dance music since then but I still love the guy. He is playing the Electric Zoo Fest at Randalls over the Labor Day weekend and in October will be pushing his third album with a full band and a new album.

For all its not inconsiderable powers, “Brigadoon” doesn’t rest in the Premier Division of Great American Musicals. For one thing, the story, about a village in Ireland that appears once every hundred years, doesn’t bear thinking about. And for another Lerner-Lowe were nearly but not quite there. “My Fair Lady” was eight years away! For a third, the movie was not that great. Still, this song is an undeniable classic – Grade: A+

Spider Bags' "Shake My Head" Reviewed

It is about all the folks who will die in the same place they ere born in. It is about meaningless lives whittled away doing, drugs, smoking blunts, drinking too much, marrying and divorcing and spinning through your life with nothing to add to the conversation. It is a celebration of, unlike Bruce, not being born to run, but being born to chase your own tale thru your own life.

Soundtrack "Sparkle" Reviewed

Without a doubt, this is the worst important album of the year. It is a disgrace. Jordin stinks. OK, maybe she doesn’t stink stink but she is really what she is: an American Idol contestant. Ejogo stinks.

Sneak Peaks: New Releases Week Of August 6th, 2012

A coupla lifetimes ago I dated a girl who had just quit her job as a dom. “A wiggle and a jiggle” was her verby term (mean cheerleader a specialty, one guy wanted to dress up as a cheerleader himself and have her stick his head inn the toilet and flush it) ! The relationship lasted like three weeks but she worshipped Rob Zombie, and made me a fan, so, yup, there is that.

My feeling about seeing the popular electronic French band M83 in an open air setting is one of expectation. I’ve yet to see the band live and feel it will be a straight drag seen from a million miles away (well, it is summerstage, a thousand miles away), On the other hand… Hurry Up, I’m Dreaming live on stage??? What’s not to like this Wednesday?

No, not that “Heatwave” but it is pretty good any way. I like Wiley I lot, I always thought it would be Wiley and not Tinie Temper that nailed down the US first, but maybe there is something a little too English about the man.

America Is My Home Pts 1 And 2 – At the height of Black Power in the 1960s, with the States at War, Brown released this spoken word tribute: “Now dig this, you tell me if I’m wrong, America is still the best country without a doubt…” Er, not gonna make many friends with the Black Panther preaching conciliation… Grade: B+

A Commotion – Mastadon and Feist – Ever since Crack In The Sky, I’ve had no problems with considering Mastadon the best metal metal band this side of the Devil Wears Prada. But this is even better. A roiling guitar, sound effects mess of a song that more than lives up to its name. I’ve never liked Feist much more than this either – Grade: A

Rock Is Dead? How About These 2012 Releases?

I am still getting a handle on the album but it may well be the best album of the year, it is almost definitely the best rock album of the year. From punk to country, drunker revved up blues jams to garage trashed ravers to. Plus a James Brown cover. And an instrumental. And is all rock and roll genius.
