He wasn't a rock guy so you may not know him, but Carly Simon did sing his "Nobody Does It Better" for a Bond film, which shows up on commercials all the time I was well, a lot more often than the bloody awful Jack White one ever did… Oh, and while it isn't rock, he also wrote Barbra Streisand's "The Way We Were", which I sing at the top of my lungs all the time, plus the Ragtime riffs for "The Sting". Incidentally, two movies that starred Robert Redford.
In 1973, Marvin was a well paid Movie Score pro in Hollywood, when he kicked it in the head to return to Broadway and write the music for, ta dah, "A Chorus Line". FOR ONE HUNDRED BUCKS A WEEK!!! And, the rest, as they say, is Broadway Musical History. It sure was a work of its ime, but of its time, well, even "Rent" couldn't beat it.
Yep, that Marvin was one singular sensation. I hope he gets it -into heaven I mean… Sure deserves it…
