Taking Back Sunday manages to steal my heart more and more with everything they do. They released a new song, titled, “Stood A Chance”, and it’s absolutely phenomenal. It’s refreshing and new, upbeat and powerful. It’s like it was made for warmer weather, driving with all the windows down and it being bright and sunny.
Lazzara’s voice is stunning. It’s so clean and crisp, and I adore how he kept with the classic TBS tactic of him also doing backup vocals, so it’s all him. The verses really allow him to show off his incredible ability to take a melody and really drive it home. It’s beautiful and chilling, and really gets me in a dancy mood.
As for the chorus, it’s very much reminiscent of “Louder Now” in how intensely poppy it is, but that’s by no means a bad thing, especially when they fade out into the bridge. Lazzara’s voice is distant and soothing, a juxtaposition that fits the song really well. I was really impressed with how they dropped the energy and picked it right back up with powerful guitars right back into the chorus, lifting it and keeping it from getting mundane for too long. It’s clever and gives hint as to how experienced these guys are, considering they’re seasoned veterans of the scene.
This is by far one of my favorite releases of theirs. If the rest of their upcoming album is up to par with this, it’ll be, no doubt, their greatest work yet.
