World's Largest Record Tops the Fabulous Forum
The Forum in Los Angeles is truly an historic sports venue, home to the Lakers back in their multi-championship years. It also hosted innumerable concerts, though frankly it wasn’t a very good place to see a show. The sound system left a lot to be desired, as I remember well from seeing Elton John there in the early ’80s.

The trick with countries in the middle of civil wars is the same as the trick with the Eagle: knowing when to get up and leave. The second half of the show plunders the post Greatest Hits, where whatever minimal charm the snide smelly superstars ever had was lost for good. So I left.

This is a perfect song, it starts with the chorus, and those waah waah waahs, and then Bowie plays between his falsetto and baritone, and he throws in handclaps and drum machines and back up singers. And the lyric is as brilliant and overwhelmingly baroque and also dramatic lyric, plus a rap: “one of these days and it won’t be long… ” that bit off an album so great he reached a zenith of artistry and paranoia never to be touched again.

Packing 20,000 middle-aged white people (the Eagles spent the evening discussing their history from the stage and on pre-taped segments. They performed almost thirty songs in a show that lasted over three hours. I wasn’t sure if I was watching a concert or serving a sentence.
