Winner – Gary Clark – Want a tix to ace blues guitarists upcoming local gigs at T5 and Apollo? Hie thee to Stubhub because they are both sold out and thereby begs the question: how did that happen? His first album stiffed big time and not just in sales, it was a huge big fat dog by a guitar god in waiting. But it didn’t matter, it was only a first step and live on stage the man is a whole other thing. Whether at the Gov’s Ball or the Clapton Crossroads, or, indeed, opening for King’s Of Leon, which he will be doing early next year, GCJ is aiming for the highest reaches of rock God status. Selling out concerts is where you start.
Loser – the Eagles, Kanye West, Justin Timberlake – There is nothing better for a rock and roll star than ticket scarcity, he makes you bigger than life when people can’t get a ticket to save your life. All three of these guys overreached, none more than West, playing four local shows the week after next, one (the first MSG) sold out. Hell for a rock star is reading “not many left” by your name on Ticketmaster: translation? some left. West should’ve cut his concerts in half, Justin and the Eagles should have each cut one concert.
