Sun Drug’s debut EP has an expansive sound, which seems to have the ambition of arena bands such as the Strokes caught on a dark day (‘Easy in Your Attitude’) or U2 snapped on a triumphant moment (‘Wildman’). The 5 tracks have a big, epic sound built around guitars and synths, moving move from sinister dance-floors (‘Soaked’) to dreamy-psychedelic balladery (’John Fante’), with a gloomy mood floating around giant hooks and bold vocals, aggressively dominating the inventive soundscapes.
The LA-based band features four musicians Collin Desha, Taylor Brown, Cameron Dmytryk and Steven Wilkin, who were formerly known as Vanaprasta, but have now regrouped to form this new project. This new EP ‘was guided and overseen by musical shaman Rocco DeLuca, who guided, taught, inspired and revolutionized the collective sound of the band’, and was recorded at guitarist Collin Desha’s home studio, without the help of a producer or engineer.
Bassist/synth player Taylor Brown said in an interview: ‘Life is a process of constant self-discovery and this is a microcosm of that. It was a lot of trial and error, a lot of fucking up, and we’ll continue to fuck up, but that’s the only way to learn.’
Beside this fresh start, the band also concentrates on their visuals as the video for ‘Easy in Your Attitude’ – an exploration of ‘the relationship between the digital and tactile worlds – demonstrates it. The video for Wildman is not shy on visual effects either and both clips were made using projection mapping techniques with the Xbox Kinect. They were so creative that they caught the attention of Vice’s Creators Project and if you want more details about how they were created, just go to their website
This Saturday June 27th, Sun Drug will be celebrating their brand new EP with a release show at Warehouse Acropolis in LA, with Green Gerry and Moon Honey, and you should expect a lot of this visual experience. Tickets for the event can be purchased here.
