Glee’s “We Are Young” Reviewed

On listening to the cover of fun’s “We Are Young” as performed by the cast of the television series Glee, I was *almost* pleasantly surprised. I say almost because, though I did like what they did with the song in most places, there were some parts that made me cringe.

I’ve got to say, I’m usuallya fan of Lea Michelle (who plays Rachel) voice, but it seemed a little dampened here. Granted, this song doesn’t really let her show off her vocal abilities but maybe that should have given way to another actor singing the major lines of the song. I was thoroughly unimpressed with Cory Monteith (Finn)singing. I don’t think I’ve ever liked the way he sings and he certainly didn’t do “We Are Young” justice.

The voices that stood out to me the most were Amber Riley (Mercedes) and Naya Rivera (Santana). What’s disappointing is that they didn’t get more time to sing. They both outshone all the other voices on this cover and I’m fairly certain I would have absolutely loved a cover of the song if it were sung just by these two women.

What killed it for me was the way everyone sung the chorus. Instead of having nice smooth, slurred, descending notes on the word “tonight”, they decided to add in this terrible warbling, making it sound like “to-nye-ee-aye-ee-aye-ee-aye-ee-aye-ee-ight”. Please listen to the actual song so you know what I’m talking about; you will understand exactly why I dislike this cover.

Perhaps if those who sing well had gotten more vocal time, and if the personalization of the chorus wasn’t terrible, this could have been a great cover. Still, at least the Glee cast didn’t completely destroy a fantastic song.As well as singlehandledly given the boys of fun. a career.
