Katy Perry has joined the marines because she found out that her boyfriend cheated on her? Isn’t it a little extreme? What was that? An ad to join the army as seen on the Fox News channel?
I know Iman already wrote about this ridiculous video for Katy Perry's totally shitty song ‘Part of Me’, which made Fucked up’s Damian Abraham react on Twitter. But I hadn’t taken the time to watch it yet, but now that I have, I can say it is really bad!
According to Iman, Damian was wrong to criticize Katy Perry because:
– War is a necessity for humanity and a way of controlling our ever-increasing population.
– The video is not dangerous since Perry is far from being able to sell the glamour-war-concept portrayed.
Well, I disagree, Katy Perry is selling tons of records, and she has a definitive influence on youth. If she can make teenagers wear pink outfits and blue wigs, she can make them join the army! And seeing all the hatred and the death threats messages that Damian received on Twitter after his infamous remark, her young and aggressive fans have learnt her lesson. Plus, she makes her cool-army vision, the 'obvious' solution to her heart problems, look like a disguised propaganda, and I bet she is not even aware of it.
Then there is the bigger question, is war a necessity? And if it is, what’s wrong with supporting the troops which defend us? I will not hide it, I am a pacifist. Yes, war has always existed but if you look at the history of humanity, there is great evidence that violence has declined. Yes, we are killer apes who like to fight, but we are in fact better than chimpanzees, we fight less than our primate cousins taking into consideration that we are much more numerous than chimps at the surface of the earth. I heard once a renown primatologist saying that New York would be a constant blood bath if it were populated by 8 million chimpanzees instead of humans.
This is Harvard University social scientist Steven Pinker’s idea in his book ‘Better Angels of Our Nature’, as he demonstrates that violence has been diminishing for millennia: ‘The present looks less sinister, the past less innocent’, he wrote to explain we have learnt from the past and have actually progressed! I am not gonna pretend that awful violence doesn’t exist in the world, but we witness its decline as civilization advances, the more civilized a country is, the less violence there is, and we have to continue this way.
War cannot continue to be a solution to regulate population, it may be a natural law, but we have arisen above natural laws and especially above natural selection when we invented medicine et technology. When we became humans, we developed features that no other species has ever developed to this extreme: altruism and empathy.
So anyone who still glorifies war and its ugly head, is not seeing this, John Lennon was right when he said that war was not the answer, nature is cruel and pitiless but, as humans, we don’t have to be! And Katy Perry is still an idiot.
